Based on these highlights I struggle to see why St Maryâs was ranked and won so much. They look slow and unathletic and most of their defensive sets they were just standing inside the arc not moving. They must just be expecting teams to be at themselves
tbf Arizona improved quite a bit when it comes to defense and physicality this year vs the PAC-12 years
Tennessee will be tough, Gonzaga will be a BYU type match up. If you can beat Tennessee, you can get ready for Florida.
The way to beat UH is to have a good center that can score inside/defend and has a good team around them.
Auburn, Alabama & possibly Florida (not sure how good they are but Condon can hoop) have those ingredients.
FU Sampson for practicing so hard early on that McFarland broke his leg.
That center better be a good passer, because heâs getting the monster every time he touches the ball.
We went 30-4, McFarland wasnât going to help our record and wouldnât be the key in any tournament run this year
Gonzaga passes better than us. And they have a top tier PG that makes good decisions. But their forwards are going to be bruised from the chest to the knees by halftime. Playing us will be like taking a hit of LSD with their nerve endings exposed.
Coach will need to solve Huff at the arc. If he does that and we suffocate their PG weâre fine.
My thoughts exactly. I figured it would be a good comp to watch the Saint Maryâs highlights since they had previously been described as a poor version of us - but I wouldnât personally make that comparison.
The SM defense in the pick and roll, on post ups, and in transition was abysmal and they barely lost the game.
I didnât see much athleticism from the Zags either outside of the one wing player. Think thier PG will struggle with our trap. I agree with Pesik that weâre not a good match up for them.
But any team can win when itâs single elimination.
A good half court man team in St. Maryâs went 2-1 against the Zags with far less talent and athleticism. I watched 2 of those games. Zags center can score if he gets it deep in the post. He gets frustrated easily. if UH gets the Zags UH will be a 8-9 point favorite and I believe they will by double digits.

A center can always help but there arenât many Broomeâs around who can be efficient enough to take over a game.
What a team must have to get to our defense is athletes who can get into the teeth of our defense. They do that it opens up everything else and forces us to chase the ball.
We destroy one dimensional teams. Case in point, BYU.

Gonzaga being such a mediocre outside shooting team is why Iâm not that worried about them. Iâd be much more concerned about a team that is âworseâ than them but can make 3s at a higher % (a team like Xavier, for instance.) Feels like the only teams capable of beating us are teams like Tech that can pass out of our traps and hit open shooters that can then actually make those shots. Gonzaga is pretty bad from outside and unless itâs a game of extreme variance, Iâm not that concerned.

Thatâs a real lazy comparison seeing as I didnât see a single double team trap in that whole video and we do them in practically every possession

SM isnât my comp, but others on this board have mentioned them as a reference point because of their strong defense (sorry that reading comprehension isnât a strength of yours).
SM is ~ top 15 in effective defensive efficiency although with a much different style.
Baylor and Iowa st both trap ball screens like we do, but they only played Baylor this year who is #145 in defensive efficiency. Baylor hasnât trapped well on defense since 2021 so thereâs no reason for me to review their game from this season.
But since you calling folks lazy, go ahead and break down some film bud!!

Over the last few years, the ultra athletic teams that can get hot from 3 have consistently given us trouble. And I just donât think Gonzaga has the athleticism or shooters to challenge our D and walk away with the W.
