We got screwed with Gonzaga

Not to be that guy but LbSIUE

Would love to see the SEC bottom teams go out like OU and UT, Vandy and A$M may be tough outs but Florida, Auburn and Alabama are the real deal.

Bama is limping into the tourney, though… and Sears hasn’t been his normal self lately…

both are great matchups… georgia is way mroe pshyical and taller…

but they are young, extremely turnover prone, no true pg in rotation …and their top scorer is a big freshmen who isnt a great passer… they are also one of the worst passing teams in the tourney overall… and a very low volume 3pt shooting team

our trapping is likely going to be an absolute nightmare for them …

despite being big and being a good offensive rebounding team, they give up a ridiculous amounts of offensive rebounds and also a poor ft shooting team

I agree, but I’m cheering for the Zags because WCC days, also, screw the SEC

I don’t believe this kid has played this year. He doesn’t show up in their stats on ESPN.

Right on. IMO J’Wan being healthy is what might separate us from winning the Natty.

C’mon, man! It’s great stuff! We definitely need more of this type of analysis. I don’t care what anyone else says, analytics in sport are so important, and pesek always does a phenominal job of looking outside the box on finding team strengths, weaknesses and probability ratios from said numbers.

Along the same lines, three of UH’s four losses are in OT, which technically translates to one-possession outcomes. Does (should) coming out on top in either or all of those change our outlook or make us a better team despite the fact we’d likely be No. 1 overall going in to the tournament had the results been different?

Something to think about as well.

Agreed, and I see us approaching that matchup in much the same way we did vs. BYU last week (with a bit of a chip on our shoulder – in this case, given Gonzaga’s brand) and therefore, going much the same way because of this approach No. 1 and how we really are a bad matchup for them anyway.

I ain’t worried. Assuming we beat SIUE, then if we can beat Gonzaga/UGA, we have smooth sailing to the F4. So I think we actually got lucky.

I tell you who got screwed is Auburn. They got Louisville, TAMU, Michigan, Michigan State, Marquette, and Iowa State in their bracket. They also got UNC. Now UNC was not good in the regular season but I don’t want to play them in the tourney. I feel like they may get some favorable officiating. Florida has a tough bracket too but considering they are the 4th number 1 seed you sort of expect that.

You are correct. My bad. I was getting google stats from the U16 FIBA ship. Lol He was averaging 10 boards which makes sense due to him being the only 16 year old standing eye to eye with the backboard. :eyes:

In that case forget Florida!!

I hadn’t watched a Gonzaga game this year, but I’m less concerned after watching their highlights from the conf championship game against St Marys.

Dick vitale has UH beating Gonzaga, then later Tennessee in elite 8 and advancing to final 4.

sec podcast preview of the goergia/zags game

all of the podcast is similar to this thead, they think georgia was screwed with this draw… they said georgia is a 9 seed… gonzaga is not a 8 seed …every host wants to pick georgia all pick the zags

says getting zags in foul trouble is the key for the zags

So many people seem convinced that we’re playing Gonzaga. Personally, I’m not convinced they get past Georgia. I’ve wanted to play them for a while, though. I’m intrigued by the matchup. At the same time, I would love to play an SEC team. I’m curious how we would match up against both of these teams.

If we get the higher seed Gonzaga on Saturday then here are some things to look at:

Their strengths

  1. Gonzaga leads the nation in Assists to Turnover ratio which is led by their PG who leads the nation at nearly 10 assists per game
  2. They have the 3rd best free throw shooting percentage in the nation but don’t get the line as much as they should
  3. They are a Top 15 team in the nation in fast break points and 2nd in the nation in scoring offense
  4. They are a top 5 team in FG percentage
  5. Good rebounding similar to us

Where the statistics show their weakest at:

  1. We have the clear better defense and rim protectors. Not a single one of their bigs rank above Tugler, Francis, or Roberts in blocks per game
  2. Statistically they aren’t a great 3 point shooting team and shoot it much better inside while Houston is the inverse where we are one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the nation

Gonzaga does a lot of things really well. They rebound, have an impressively low turnover percentage compared to the pace and assists they create on offense, they shoot it among the best inside the 3 point line and shoot it over 80 percent as a team from the free throw line. Houston needs to keep them away from the free throw line, limit cheap fast point breaks, and challenge their bigs defensively

the good news for us is that Gonzaga/Georgia will have a dog fight for their first game then have to face a Houston squad that had a cupcake for their first game.

If they are tired after fighting each other, down to the wire, the last team you wan to face with ONLY One day of rest is a Houston squad that wears our their opponents.

I thought the same thing about Arizona . . . . .

I think i would rather play Gonzaga than Georgia but I think Georgia will prepare us more for the tournament.

I think Georgia is more battle tested and will get us ready for the type of games will have throughout the tournament
