Isn’t Horn trying to decrease the amount of students admitted? Or something like that.
I think their students will still be responsible for housing and meals.
That’s true. Just tuition. I believe a chunk of the promise is covered by federal Pell grant funds. It’s surprising that this applies to the satellite schools as well. Will A&M match? Will kids from divorced families making under $100k get free tuition?
We have something similar, as do most major universities. We have a more restrictive cap on eligibility, though.
With that said, schools should start being more careful about this stuff. I know it’s wound up being back-breaking for some smaller private schools.
OK, so we do it for $65K families and below.
But the UT system is now going to do that for $100K families and below.
Again…should we follow suit?
We have budget issues already, so I’m gonna say no on that one. Low-income students from the Houston metro will still likely prefer UH, since living at home and paying a fraction of tuition is still probably cheaper than paying for housing. (And also, calling a sub-$100k household “low-income” is wild, given that the median household income in Houston in 2022 was around $60k.)
I called them LOWER income, to be precise, not “low” income.
$100K families aren’t poor…but they ain’t RICH either, especially if there are several mouths to feed. AND…if their children plan to not live at home and mooch off of Mommy and Daddy…as most 18 year olds prefer…then putting their kids through college won’t be a cakewalk.
Gee.
When I was growing up…
Kids WANTED to move out as soon as they could.
It is 65k and i know atm does it not sure who was first but in this economy 100k is not enough to sustain or even get your kids through college and be comfortable. If we have more kids getting an education for free theyll be more likely to donate in the future.
I was one of those kids.
Nice idea but it’s a shrewd way to steal minority enrollment from places who are designed to help them - UT has access to demographic data and everything needed to make this move - slick
But I thought DEI was bad
This is a HARD NO!
We desperately need MORE Traditional type students to protect the investments into our University as a Destination…UT has plenty of Traditional Students so they have the wiggle room to accept a small % of these type of students.
I say that as someone who came from a lower middle class family that would have qualified
I see today’s the day we’ve chosen to go mask-off about the “traditional student” discourse.
Yes…we should ALL support Dr Khator’s vision
Which, to you, means not recruiting the middle-class and lower-income students.
I’d recruit them…but would try to recruit them to be “traditional,” full-time, on campus students as much as we can; of course you know I advocate for a freshman housing mandate.
They can live at home and mooch off of Mommy and Daddy if they don’t want to live on campus and truly want to save money on room and board, as they more than likely won’t if they live off campus. It’s possible, but it’s VERY hard based on rents in the Houston area.
Very few of my fellow law students finished lower in debt that I did precisely because most were living off campus in the Galleria, Med Center, Astrodome area, Midtown, downtown, etc. I lived on campus and comparatively saved.
I had to work my way through U of H as did my wife. I finished in 4 years, she in 5.
I am very proud of that.
I have always felt the strength of U of H is that it gave people like me and my wife a way up.
