Recruiting discussion: "Diamonds in the Rough"

How do you know we don’t have one of the top three classes in the AAC? You saw a website that proclaimed it so? Last year, 247 had us 5th, three points behind UCF. Imagine how pissed Central Florida fans must be! And two of the other teams ahead of us signed more players, one three more and one four more. But wait!!! Rivals has us third, and just 1/100th of a point behind #2 USF, which signed 4 more. Hmm . . . so who’s right?

Don’t get caught up in the rankings. I have been following recruiting religiously since the 70s, and it finally dawned on me a few years ago that it’s a game. That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t love to sign Alabama’s class. Sure, the elite programs are going to get elite players. But once you’re past the top 30 or 40 or so teams, it’s a crap shoot. Our 2008 class was ranked #100 by Rivals. When those players were seniors, they finished 13-1 and #14 in the Coaches’ Poll. So do you take Thaddeus Lagrone and Davonte Thomas (Top 100 or close guys) or Elandon Roberts and Steven Taylor, barely two-star prospects? Chauntez Jackson (a top CA recruit with PAC 12 and SEC offers) or Cam Malveaux, whose other offer was from Lamar? I know the DL from Pt. Arthur that we got was near the top of our board even if he didn’t have much recruiting exposure. We liked his film, and he dominated in camp. Final analysis: You can only trust the W-L record. If Applewhite doesn’t win pretty big this year he’ll at least be on a very hot seat, as it should be. In the meantine, no need to get your blood pressure up over Internet recruiting rankings.

Exactly there really isn’t much separation from 1-5

I’m not an insider. For anyone who is, was changing coaches all his decision or was he “encouraged” to do so? Still seems odd to me that he was so willing to change his frequently stated offensive philosophy so drastically after 1 season. While this is no Air Raid and can still be run heavy, this is a system he has no experience with

All I know is UNT won more games and was likely a better team than us last season. And as of now, they have a higher ranked 2019 recruiting class

I have no insider info either, but I do know Brad Johnson was leaving anyway to go with Dan Mullen to Florida. What I heard (not from anyone inside) was that Applewhite was going to get rid of him anyway. Now whether he was “encouraged” to do so or not, I don’t know. But, if this new hire turns out to be better than the previous one, I’ll definitely give him credit for that.

Oh no! Mr. Bill!

Half a year before the early signing day UNT is rated higher than UH by a recruiting website!

Hmm . . . So Houston and North Texas had two common opponents last year, SMU and Rice. Here are those scores:

SMU 54
UNT 32

Houston 35
SMU 22

UNT 30
Rice 14

Houston 38
Rice 3

Maybe you and some kids could go wrap Applewhite’s house tonight.

Was in Auburn playing golf one year sometime in the early late 1990s and a girl at the bar said they were going to “roll a house”. Now I am used to “rolling” meaning something a little more violent but I guess that is what they say in Alabama. They “roll” Toomer’s Corner with TP after every win. Your comment made me laugh and sent me back to a simpler time.

Basing your evaluation of the teams on comparative results. Then I’ll say
Tulane 62 Tulsa 28
Houston 17 Tulsa 45

Tulsa 1-10 vs non UH
Tulsa 1-0 vs UH

But if youre content UNT is better than we are, go for it. They have a head coach that teams want. We don’t.

I do not believe that anyone who looked at the situation realistically expected Herman to be hear for the long haul. We all knew as soon as texas came open he would be a candidate. The issue is the way he left point blank. Frost left UCF the perfect way. Kept everything about the team, and when it was time for him to leave, he addressed the team and coached them in the bowl game they earned that season.

We all knew business would take Herman away most likely to texas, we just don’t like the way Herman does business anymore.

Not a valid comparison. Neither team played UNT nor did UNT play USF, Arizona, or Navy. I’m not content about UNT (actually I don’t think much about UNT) or the ‘17 season. That’s why I said Applewhite deservedly will at least be on a very hot seat if we don’t win a lot of games. I’m glad you weren’t in Harry Fouke’s chair in 1963.

3-10 UCONN 20
Tulsa 14

Houston 17
Tulsa 45

Is that a better comparison for you? UConn is better than us…

3 of UNT’s 4 losses were to teams who got top 25 votes. All of their losses were to bowl teams.

Were our losses that good?

Sagarin ranked UNT #101 in RPI, UH #61. But whatever. I just don’t have any interest in dragging out that comparison. Not sure why it’s so important to you. I couldn’t really say if we would have beaten UNT. I would think so given that SMU whipped them, but who knows?

Yeoman improved the team’s win total by 2 in year 1. Did CMA?
Yeoman won a bowl by 28 in year 1. Did CMA?

But if you’re going to invoke Yeoman, if CMA is 15-23-2 after 4 years and placed on probation for NCAA violations, will you be supporting him?

And James Madison was #44

I always support UH coaches until I simply cannot any longer, e. g., Levine after UTSA. Did you miss where I said that Applewhite will deservedly be on a very hot seat if we don’t win a lot of games? What should I do? Email Pezman and demand CMA be fired now? I doubt he’ll pay much attention to me. Or I could do what most fans will: look forward to 2018 and make an evaluation when the season is over.

Fair enough. I’m guessing there haven’t been many situations where there wasn’t something in the contract that spells it out.

He took a paycut as well as lost his OC position and playcalling duties. He doesn’t do that if he has leverage.
