Maybe that is why we are getting mostly 3’s and not mostly 2’s?
So $150m upgrade in football facilities was just for the fans?
UNT has 9 committed and all are 3 star players. SMU has a bunch too. That’s not to say they’re better. Just saying getting 3 star players isn’t as big of deal anymore. I think they give out more now than they did 10+ years ago.
Since 2012, at least half of our signing class has been 3 star or better every year but 2015. Interesting the trend started after Sumlin left. He blamed UH for recruits not answering the phone. Maybe it was just him.
Sumlin recruited pretty well on paper. His classes were rated higher than Briles’. We have gotten better since then but I’d imagine facilities and conference helped with that. His 2009 and 2010 classes were rated pretty well. A lot of the 2012 class originally committed to him.
This is the issue. You’re still basing your knowledge of CMA’s overall contributions to the team’s success on presumptions. If you truly are trying to gauge without whatever prejudices you have against him, then why not ask “how do I(you) know he’s average at best”? With that, here’s my next couple of questions because people on this board seem to assume; what do you think a head coach of a D1 football program is responsible for? How are his duties responsible for the success of the football team? When Herman was here, no one questioned his duties and his influence on the success of the football team because he was being baptized by the media and YouTube hype videos. Fast forward, CMA is not the same screaming head of hair plugs as Herman, but let’s not assume he doesn’t know what he’s doing because you can’t utilize social media and ESPN to gauge his worthiness.
Lastly, if there’s is one thing that CMA has done that a handful of he coaches in our conference have not, is coach under Brown and Saban. You don’t think anything they did in excellence rubbed off? We might have more of an advantage than you think.
I grew up in Louisiana and Texas, mostly Louisiana. I went to LSU for 2 1/2 years. I went to UH for 4 years of night school and graduated from UH which has my allegiance. I pay attention to most FBS schools in Texas and La. and respect UNT, but don’t put them on the same rung as UH. I would much rather play them than TSU or any non-FBS team.
Your schedule and record from last year is why I don’t think UNT was as good as UH. UNT got pounded by FAU, and SMU. Their wins were against weak teams and the games they won were usually very tight and high scoring which tells me you didn’t have much of a defense. Against our common opponents, Rice and SMU we did better. We beat SMU handily and you lost to them, we beat Rice 38-3 and you beat them 30-14. We beat a good Arizona team, whereas, UNT really didn’t have any, what I would call, good wins. La Tech was your best win in my opinion and they were an average team last year.
Better to get pounded by good teams than to get pounded by Tulsa and lose to Tulane. (another thing Applewhite has in common with Levine)
1 season under Saban where they went 7-6. Yes Saban has had some coaching assistant successes but he also had Keven Steele as DC the same year CMA was there. Thats a ringing endorsement.
And Mack Brown’s tree. Which of the below (from Wikipedia) do you want CMA to be?
Assistant coaches under Brown who later became NCAA Division I head coaches include:
Major Applewhite: Houston (2016–present)
Tim Brewster: Minnesota (2007–2010)
Gene Chizik: Iowa State (2007–2008), Auburn(2009–2012)
Bryan Harsin: Arkansas State (2013), Boise State (2014–present)
Tom Herman: Houston (2015–2016), Texas (2017–present)
Will Muschamp: Florida (2011–2014), South Carolina (2016–present)
Greg Robinson: Syracuse (2005–2008)
Dick Tomey: San Jose State (2005–2009)
Carl Torbush: North Carolina (1997–2000), East Tennessee State (2013–2017)
Everett Withers: North Carolina (2011), James Madison (2014–2015), Texas State (2016–present)
What is a head coach responsible for? Running a clean program, winning, and recruiting
Running a clean program? As far as I know, check. Although some will question how clean hiring Briles, I’m not.
Winning? 7-5 is the definition of average at best. Not winning vs Tulsa and Tulane are way below average. Credit for beating some good teams but more than offset by losing to teams we shouldnt lose to.
Recruiting? Not yet. Best he’s shown is the ability to get grad transfers. This is especially troubling given we were sold on his relationship to HS coaches. This also goes back to his time here as OC. Was he not responsible for getting RBs and WRs here for the last several years?
And Herman wasn’t questioned because he won. All the hype and social media would have meant nothing if he went 7-5
Wow UH is average at best because we went 7-5; but SMU is a good team going 7-6, though we beat them handily – unlike the previous year under Herman the great. That is logical?
SMU was not good, but comparatively speaking vs Tulsa and Tulane
The first sign you are losing an argument, you make up stuff other people say and argue that. Please find anywhere in all of my arguments that I said UH is an average team.
Just curious, for your “wow.” Do you think both UH and SMU were average or that SMU was average and UH was good. You obviously don’t think both could be good or you wouldn’t have replied with that hyperbole.
The season better hurry up !!!
Lol was CMA’s record 7-6 this year? And what was Saban’s record after that? See the potential trend? Are any of those coaches in our conference that you just posted???
Lol yup, you summed it up. Clearly you don’t understand your repeated oversimplification of the HC position is an issue. I guess he just has to show up to practice and meetings, find a recliner, put his feet up and just proclaim, “hey look at me, I’m running a clean program”. lol Yup that’s all it takes. He get’s paid millions to claim he’s significant to the program…
The premise of this board you’re supporting is based on hyperbole. Here we(the panic pals) are complaining about a group of kids who aren’t even on campus, and CMA’s recruits(first class) are sophomores at this point; most haven’t even seen the field but evidently he can’t recruit. Panic due to limited information is strong. Some of you guys should never be detectives!
Bit confused on why you chose to reply to me with that quote and the message you were trying to convey.
Was pointing out that complaining about the use of hyperbole is pointless given your stance on this board.
So CMA already has a national championship as HC on his resume like Saban did coming to Bama. No?
Bama year before Saban, 6-7 (technically 0-7 but I’ll ignore that). 1st year Saban 7-6. Thats an improvement, just like CMA. No?
And BTW, Saban was 9-2 his first year ever as a head coach improving on the 6-5 record of the team the year before. Just like, CMA. No?
And we had the #12 recruiting class last year and #3 this year. No? We don’t even have #3 in the AAC.
So no, I don’t see the comparison but I’m looking forward to 12-2 and #6 ranking this year and our undefeated national championship in 2019 to follow your trend. Is that what you’re predicting since CMA is the next Saban?
So oh wise one, what is he responsible for? I’m betting everything you mention falls under one of the 3 categories I said.
I didnt mention running practice. Falls under winning. As long as the team is winning, no one cares how he runs practice. If he can win sitting in a recliner, good for him and everyone would be happy with that practice routine. But obviously if you dont run a good practice, you dont win shutting down your silly recliner at practice point.
Hiring coaches. Under winning.
Keeping players eligible. Under clean program.
Coordinating HS player evaluation. Under recruiting.
On and on and on.
Do you think Renu cares about 90% of anything CMA does as long as he’s winning and running a clean program? She probably doesn’t even care about recruiting as long as he’s winning.
Was he not recruiting for UH before last year?
