Recruiting discussion: "Diamonds in the Rough"

Apples and oranges. Neither has enough of a history to differentiate who is a better coach.

Thank you, criminy.

Its funny how yall were in awe every time there was a boom under herman and the announcement was a big time recruit. now all of a sudden recruiting rankings don’t matter? LOL yall contradict yourselves too much.

No they didnt, not even close
Yeoman had recruiting classes that far exceeded anything Herman or Summie ever did
just as an example, Yeoman’s 75 recruiting class, who would go on to help win 2 SWC championships, was a great class anchored by 2 top 10 players, Red Oglesby and David Hodge. Hodge was regarded as best player in the state by many
his 1980 class had 6 of the states top 44 recruits in it, guys like Daryl Ward and Simon Fletcher. and the 77 recruiting class was better than anyone in the state, better than Texas, better than A&M
thats what winning the SWC in your first year will do for you

I got the receipts. should i start posting them? I kept the file and recruiting back then was way different than it is now. rivals, 247 and espn didn’t exist.

I see what you did there !!

How do you guarantee that? You can’t even guarantee that CMA wouldnt get blown out by a 2 win team.

Hopefully the OC that Littrell couldn’t crack bails out Applewhite

You’re putting to much weight on 247 espn etc. Multiple people have explained there is not enough people working for these companies to evaluate EVERY player. that doesnt mean that they are not 4 or 5 stars. Some just don’t go to camp and when the bigger programs are interested so do the ranking websites. Transfer talent makes up for not getting a top 25 class because in reality we have a top 25 class. But post what you got man lets see

I’m saying when Herman was HC you guys used to be in amazement at how good our recruiting class is, now Applewhite is HC and all of a sudden “recruiting rankings don’t matter”. you cant have it both ways.

You were doing OK until you added that. You have absolutely no idea where we stand because you know even less of all the other recruiting classes than ESPN and 247. It’s just a silly statement to make as if it’s a fact.

You’re telling me I can’t go online look at a transfer list see their “rating” and calculate where we would be based on that number?

I am not worried about recruiting rankings. I am more worried about can these coaches get the most out of the players they recruit. Sumlins staff could (except defense) and Levines staff could not. Hermans could so can Applewhites staff do the job. Last year was not to promising on offense I am optimistic with new hires we will be fine.

I doubt you “recalibrated” the other 130+ teams or even teams ranked 25th through 75th to keep it relevant. Did you really look at the transfers/jucos of all the teams 25 through 75 and adjust their “ratings” as well? How many spots did Ole Miss move up?

Also when calibrating for transfers, did you also account for ones leaving?

Lol It’s easy for Littrell to have a better record than his predecessor when his predecessor got fired. The guy before him did not get promoted. SL also went 5-8 in his first season. How is 5-8 > 7-5 ?Bad comparison. Second, his offenses wouldn’t run circles around CMA’s offenses because offenses clearly are ran against defenses
*face palm. His offenses were going against some of the worst defensive talent in the country as well. Dude was only able to put up less than 400 yards on Rice.

Littrell also:

  • Lost to SMU

  • Gave up 49 points to Army

  • Got blown out by FAU twice (gave up 69 points in one)

  • Had nail biters against UAB (do they even have a program?), UTSA, LA Tech

  • Gave up 38 points to a school that just recently joined the FBS- Old Dominion

  • He also got steamrolled by Troy

Now ask yourself this, if a coach gives up more than 38 points 6 times in a season in C-USA play, do you think he would do better vs anyone in the AAC? lol If you give up more than 38 points 6 times it doesn’t matter what CMA runs on offense, he’d beat you running the same play over and over (see above for how many points he gave up to Army). There’s a reason no one called Littrell after going 9-4; 4 losses were blowouts, and 4 of his wins were decided by 3 points or less. He is not better

I too am not trying to sound like an elitist but please don’t compare anything the AAC does to C-USA. Congrats on the 10 early 3 stars tho, I read he recently lost one to Bowling Green.:joy::joy::joy:.

And here we have it, context around a head coach and how it relates to the word “success”
I thought we’d never get there. lol If CMA is successful, Briles will get the credit, if he fails, people will want to promote Briles and can CMA. It’s extremely silly to believe that he isn’t responsible for any percentage of the success this team can/will have.

All aboard the fickle fan train.

I just caught this; a person can be die-hard and have flaws in their logic simultaneously
Also no need to chest thump. We’re on the internet after all. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I was clearly talking about his history as an offensive coordinator. There isn’t enough data on Applewhite to compare them as a head coach other than, UNT improved and UH didn’t in their first years but UNT had more room to improve and UH had more room to decline so apples to oranges right?

Your recruiting thing was off the charts bad though. He obviously had a lot less to work with but isn’t Applewhite losing a recruit to Tulane just as laughable as Litrell losing a recruit to Bowling Green?

“not trying to sound like an elitist” It’s the mantra for a good chunk of long time Coogs though isn’t it? Complain about how UT fans, A&M fans and media doesn’t give UH it’s due (big brother keeping us down) and then shit all over other schools that have smaller athletic budgets for their attendance, facilities, etc.

To be clear, he is a diehard Coog over other colleges. I’m pretty sure he was the one that said he was going to have to miss the second half of a huge UH basketball game to watch the first half of a regular Rockets game. Maybe it was a different “DieHard.” :open_mouth:

huh? what game are you referring to? must got me mixed up with someone else.

I don’t know many Diehards so maybe. I think it was the Wednesday game at SMU and the Rockets were playing 2 hours later at the Clippers. So the “diehard” said, damn I’m going to miss the second half of the SMU game. I said to them if you have to miss the second half of a big Cougar game to watch the first half of an unimportant Rocket game, you shouldn’t call yourself a diehard.
