Mattress Mack

I read recently he lost 1-Million Dollars betting on the Texas Longhorns game against Washington.

Before placing the bet Mattress Mack said, “I have an enormous passion for UT football.”

Does anyone know how much he has won or loss in bets recently?

I think a great deal is offset by his furniture sale promotions… if the team from texas had won, he would’ve given away some free furniture to counter the winnings I believe. And vice versa he loses the bet, but increases furniture sales on the promotion.

I think Mack has only won one of these bets…lol

I know he does it for publicity but dude has pissed away 10s of millions of dollars.

Yep, a chunk of what he is doing is a hedge against promotions.

It’s not all. He really likes to gamble too. Lol

Instead of using insurance he uses sports books. The perks of being a whale are better than what he gets from an insurance company

Mack is a good businessman but definitely has a gambling problem. He is a good person who’s done a lot for his community too.

I love Mack but wish he would quit betting on Houston’s teams. I’m starting feel like he’s jinxing them.

Dont worry. He may have lost the bet, but he sold a ton of furniture to offset it. Smart businessman

If I’m not mistaken, Jim McIngvale (“Mattress Mack”) was one of the 100-200 players on UT’s 1969 national champion FB team…before transferring up to North Texas.

Mattress Mack is a contradiction. Mack is one of the biggest sports gamblers in the country. In an interview in the past year, he said he initially supported gaming in Texas but now opposes it. He says the revenue to the state is inflated and worries about the impulsiveness of the behavior.

His abrupt about-face on this issue made me wonder if any of the big gambling interests from out of state offered him some sweet comps to change his tune.

I don’t know about that, but I do seem to recall that he was one of the largest investors in the horse track - Sam Houston Race Park - before his investment got mostly (if not entirely) wiped out by MAXXAM when they converted their “bond investment” into “equity shares” and diluted or squeezed out the limited partners’ original capital investment.

[NOTE: I was a corporate officer at MAXXAM Property Company back in the early '90’s.]
