I think a great deal is offset by his furniture sale promotions… if the team from texas had won, he would’ve given away some free furniture to counter the winnings I believe. And vice versa he loses the bet, but increases furniture sales on the promotion.
If I’m not mistaken, Jim McIngvale (“Mattress Mack”) was one of the 100-200 players on UT’s 1969 national champion FB team…before transferring up to North Texas.
Mattress Mack is a contradiction. Mack is one of the biggest sports gamblers in the country. In an interview in the past year, he said he initially supported gaming in Texas but now opposes it. He says the revenue to the state is inflated and worries about the impulsiveness of the behavior.
His abrupt about-face on this issue made me wonder if any of the big gambling interests from out of state offered him some sweet comps to change his tune.
I don’t know about that, but I do seem to recall that he was one of the largest investors in the horse track - Sam Houston Race Park - before his investment got mostly (if not entirely) wiped out by MAXXAM when they converted their “bond investment” into “equity shares” and diluted or squeezed out the limited partners’ original capital investment.
[NOTE: I was a corporate officer at MAXXAM Property Company back in the early '90’s.]
Did you see him wearing his UT gear the other day Chris. . You good w that!
Week before that he was at the A&M Bowl game wearing his Aggies jersey.
Wherever there is a camera… Mattress Mack will be there.
