Texas St. is talking with The American, Mountain West, and PAC-12.
Geographicaly, the AAC would make sense. Less travel cost. The one question they may have is which one (AAC or PAC-12) will have a better TV contract in the future?
Four AAC schools must have gotten word the PAC-12 just wouldn’t be worth it.
Football and Basketball Success were both a part but UH, UC, and UCF invested in their athletic programs (paying coaches, investing in facilities, etc.) that’s the common denominator compared to for example Memphis who wonders why they were left out.
I talked to a relative who is a Texas St. alum and he felt The American would be their best option. He said the only negative he’d have with both the MWC and PAC-12 is game time and number of networks he may need to subscribe to so he can watch streaming games.
I talked to my older brother who is a TSU (first class to graduate under tsu v swt) alum and he said his opinion doesn’t mean jack to what conference they play under.
If the AAC and MWC are closed, then the PAC needs to grab Texas St and SHSU (maybe UTEP in place of SHSU). Gives them a solid market hold in Texas and does not have to try to convince FCS teams to move up. Also prevents them from getting too stretched, which I think is not good for the mid to low level conferences budgets.
The PAC Light does actually have more Massey Top 60 football teams and Massey Top 80 basketball teams than the AAC (Memphis is the only one in the AAC in both).
BUT…
To be fair…
It’d be tough to convince a lot of schools to change conferences when you have no clue what their TV deal will be.
