Drove down Cullen yesterday

Had time to kill before my flight out of Hobby and wanted to see what the new Cullen Blvd looks like…my goodness…branches and tree stumps not hauled off, new lights not converted yet…dead trees because lack of water, grass not mowed…good grief…never understood how you can build multi million dollar bldgs and allow the landscape to die and ruin the surroundings!!!

Like I’ve said before, its as if UH admin is making UH suck on purpose. If I came out of HS today instead of almost 15 years ago, I would have gone somewhere else.

2014-2017 was peak UH campus life. Football was thriving, multiple bars near campus, Greek Life was active, new apartments were packed, satellite and many restaurants on campus were booming, etc.

On this I’ll give UH a provisional pass since heavy trash hauling is still lagging all around the city from the storm.

I just now got a roll off container delivered to get rid of tree waste.

If this is still the case in 6 weeks then it’s on UH.

Not a good look if you’re a prospective student. We drove down Cullen nine days ago and it seemed solid. Nice entrance from the freeway. Fertitta Center, impressive football stadium. Turn on Wheeler and see lots of updated housing. My niece found the football stadium to be impressive but didn’t want to stop and look around. I’m trying to convince her to pick UTD instead of UNT Dallas after CC. 22 ACT and top quarter or half of a Richardson HS. Wants to be a third grade teacher.

Very disappointing. Aesthetics matter. In my fantasy world, a hard charging AD would understand the optics and never let that happen.

Heck. if third grade was like it was when I was in it, teaching Reedin, Riten, and Rithmatik. she could probably teach it right now.

Agree 100%. I took my daughter out several weeks ago hoping she’d find it appealing. (Pre hurricane) She’s going to have a lot of choices. Fences falling over, grass up to your knees. Trash on the sidewalks. I’m going to take her back out in a month or so. Hoping things will be fit and finished.

I attended UH 2014-2018, agree with everything you said

However, 2013-2017 was peak Greek life across the country honestly. It’s not dead, but it’s becoming less popular year after year from what I’ve been told

Select SEC schools are the only schools that still put a lot of effort into Greek life, but even UT and A&M’s Greek life systems are shells of their former selves

Where do you get that from?

One thing to consider, they are planning major upgrades for the centenial. It is possible that they are delaying some maintenance until then. However, I haven’t been over on campus since basketball season so I don’t know what it looks like right now. I do know that so much looks well, so much better and different than it was when I got out of highschool in the 90’s. Being a student in the 90’s and in the 2010’s at UH lets me know just how far we have come.

Greek Life is still big at my private undergrad college in Ohio, but it did take a bit of a hit during the COVID years.

Coming back now though.

Knowing our president like I do, Cullen will in top shape come Labor Day weekend and the UNLV kickoff. I have spoken with her about asthetics of campus and the big push is for the Centenial but it will be ready for football.

True that, I stay in the East End area & we still have tree stumps & debris since the last storm out all over neighborhood driveways. It’s citywide rn

How many colleges did you go to, Law?

I have six degrees from six different schools.

May start working on number seven soon…just to try and use up my GI Bill benefits.

Then I’ll get to work on my Texas Hazelwood Act benefits.

I can give them a mulligan for the tree debris…but allowing trees to die and not cutting grass…they have an irrigation system…no one monitors it and makes sure stuff doesn’t die. That has always been a problem for many years…no excuse…to plant new trees along Cullen and many are now dead is just plain unacceptable.

IMHO it leads to another issue that has been discussed…of first impression…when family friends or prospective students visit the campus for the first time…they better leave with a “WOW” not a “UGH”…especially when they are from the Houston area!!!

Again millions spent on bldgs but pennies on aesthetics/surroundings!!!

Cannot argue with anything in there
