Ben, I don’t remember naming individuals when I said the DL wasn’t very good, which overall I don’t think it was and our record pretty much bears that out. How many times did the opponents gash us through the line?
DL starters were fine its just when they came out for a rest we would get gashed and combine that with our poor LB play thats why the run defense was so bad.
No, you said our D-line wasn’t good, that we lacked against the run and didn’t get many sacks.
I’m not going to argue that our overall defense was good, but I don’t think the line was the issue.
To your points, we were 6th out of 14 in sacks (1 away from tying for 2nd), and 6th out of 14 in rushing yards allowed per attempt. On top of having two of the top linemen in the league. So in our first B12 season we were at least above average by those metrics.
Maybe that’s what the stats say, but my eyes watched us get gashed on 3rd down and 5 or less too many times and couldn’t stop too many drives. We didn’t have a 4-8 record because they were good.
Our defensive issues were more in our secondary than our defensive line.
Football has changed a LOT since I played. In my day, the DLs had gap responsibility and were there to eat up blockers so that the LBs would be freed up to make the tackles. DEs were to set the edge and hold the backside of the pursuit in case of a reverse type play and to obviously rush the passer. Yes…you need a good DL to have a good defense, but I do feel our weakness was the poor tackling and less than stellar play of our LBs and our Safeties. I think it’s just good to know which players have which responsibilities to better understand the “why” of performance outcomes.
Agree. We missed more tackles than I can even remember. This went on for far too long.
Cincinnati ran it right down our throats for over 200 yards in our own stadium. Other teams lit up our secondary like a Christmas tree. It was less of a particular player or defensive group that cost us all year, it’s simply that the unit as a whole stunk and lacked cohesion. Looked like 11 individuals out there trying to make a play instead of just doing their job. It didn’t matter if teams wanted to run it or pass it, either choice was going to work out well for them. And as far as the tackling issues, too many times our guys didn’t make the tackle because they weren’t in good position and squared up with the ball carrier. We just straight up got beat. Lucky for us, we made a change and brought in a new staff that’s already getting it fixed.
Thanks Mom!
Belk was Belking.
Errrr…no.
Are you all surprised that Corby Meekins was not retained with his strong ties to Houston High Schools?
How did that help us in recruiting when he was here?
Oliver signed bc of his brother. He even said it he was going to lsu but his brother is the reason why he signed with us.
Disappointed but not surprised
Not sure who is in charge of making updates to the football staff page and announcing the new hires. But whoever is responsible for this job at UH needs to seriously step the f up.
This Dana laziness has to go.
Build on the momentum and create a buzz around football.
I don’t think they put them on there until it’s official and by that I mean all contracts signed and cleared through our legal department
This is Willie Fritz…a handshake and his word good enough…legal dept…bah!..they should be looking to loopholes on CDH buyout…
I’m honestly surprised they didn’t have grounds for termination last season when CDH told the UH home fan base to F-off. That’s not how you should represent the University paying you millions.
This was a toxic relationship that was waiting to explode from day ONE!
I wonder how the contract was structured. It appears to me that there are several instances where a reduced amount of payout could be negotiated based on him not fulfilling his end of the bargain.
