Now a question is how are they going to seed the brackets? Are the conference champions going to get the highest seeds 1-6, and then the at-large bids, or are they going to seed based on the CFP poll?
Probably a special ranking committee of Herbstreet-Warren-Saban will decide that.
It all depends on the Benjamins. It always does.
Current plan: top four conference champs get a bye. Last two conference champs can be seeded anywhere.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they seeded an at large in top 4, like the 2021 retro example above with uga getting a bye. I haven’t read the agreement tho.
Technically, there’s no automatic bids. The 6 top ranked conference champions get a bid, plus the 6 highest ranked teams that are not one of the 6 top ranked conference champions. One would assume 5 of the top ranked conference champions would be P5 and only one of the remaining conference champions would be selected. A conference champ with a cupcake schedule would not make it.
Could change but as of right now Baylor gets the spot.
Is that the rule proposed, that top 4 seeds must be conf champs?
Yes. Notre Dame has specifically talked about never getting a bye
A few years ago both the AAC & MWC champion were ranked higher than the PAC champion so it can happen.
I disagree
I think at least 1-2 G5s would make if they have an absolute pathway to the playoff
Ugh. They still have the selection committee in there. Should have left to computers in my opinion.
Oregon in 2020 would’ve been edged out by Cincy and Coastal Carolina. The PAC stunk.
The other most important part is, will the A5s retain their $66M upfront playoff money or will they get rid of that and transfer it to the teams that qualify?
I think it’s going to be the latter which means no P5 or G5 designations. Your conference reputation and strength of schedule will determine your playoff ranking.
Doubt it, the four highest ranking champions will define new P4. That slot shall be for the SEC, BIG, ACC and the BIG12.
I think the pac12 champion , will always rank lower than fourth. Part of the calculation here is to ensure the BIG plays the Rose Bowl .
Equally, have a difficult time seeing 16 school conference, receiving similar distribution to 10 school conference.
Previous format allocated 66 million to each P5 conference , with G5s splitting about 80 million or so.
I think that will continue, with lesser ratio to G5s in exchange for participation.
Voting to expand the playoffs was the easy part. Headache will be how to distribute revenue.
USC was 5-0 until the conference championship game… (Strange season)
Of course at least 1 G5 will get a bid and it may be possible to get 2, but unlikely unless the Pac12 sucks.
This would have been so much more fun to watch than the SEC showcase we get every year. I watched the Cincy game and that was it last year!
Me, too.
