…quicker than imagined.
Just wait till they one day get ranked top 4, have a bye week and miss out hosting a 25 million dollar home game.
14 is nice …16 nicer! Army should be in the playoffs!

If they do this, it needs to be for all conferences to get represented, not for additional at large
That’ll never happen unfortunately
14 team playoff? Why not 24 team playoff? You are going to get there eventually. Why wait when you can do it now?
IT might pay dividends to the SEC and B1G. part of the quote: ESPN recently reported that the Big Ten and SEC had asked that their respective conference champions receive the only two byes in a 14-team field
Also said there was push back, but not completely ruled out.
This topic has been in discussion for months.
after they get the first ratings on the first playoff games, you know its going to 14 and probably 24. peeps dont line up to watch bad bowls but they will line up for bad playoff games; i am certain of it.
Why not have a 16 team playoff like the FCS level has?
I’m not too sure where you got 16 from, but the FCS is a 24 team playoff which is the perfect number. They have two 12 team brackets and the winner of both brackets, meet up in the championship game.
It would mean a lot more money so I’m surprised Sankey isn’t pushing for it.
Seriously, I would hate having a bye-week instead of having a home playoff game.
I mean it’s one less game to win, but it’s a huge marquee game at home when we are competitive, something we just don’t get very often.
I’m guessing they’re going up incrementally to get more money from the networks with each slight addition.
OTOH, possibly the hang up are the Big 10 and SEC who may want to ensure that they have at least two teams that get a bye.
Both are cynical reasons, but college sports has made me very cynical these last few years.
Expansion should include a 6th conference champion.
In a 24 team playoff, 8 teams would get a bye. Remember, it’s two 12 team brackets. So of course, the SEC and B1G would get 3 or 4 byes each. I think the only guarantee byes should go to each P4 conference champion.
As far as the TV networks, you include ESPN, FOX, TNT, TBS and whoever else wants to pay for these games. $$$
This is the quickest and easiest way to get more money to schools, especially now, since they have to start giving about $20M per year to athletes.
I expect that is because then the SEC and B1G will not get their bye. I tend to be a pessimist towards these changes though.
There shouldn’t be a bye. Just do 16 teams. Let the top seed host for the first round, do the NY6 bowl locations for the quarters and semis, and then an NFL stadium for the championship. Simple.
Can we expand the playoff until UH makes it. 128 team play off!
Can you imagine the ticket prices and merch that could be sold for a home game?!?!?! I seriously hope UH can get one some day.
All those that think 16 or even 24 is too many need to look around and see what other sports do.
The NFL, the greatest playoff money maker of all time, does 14 teams and they only have 32 total teams!!!
NCAA D1 mens basketball does what…68…and there are 350+ teams…so 19% or so.
If football went to 24 it would be only be 18% of the 134 teams.
DO IT!
I’m not too optimistic that UH will ever get to host a playoff game.
The $$$ generated from the playoff game tickets in a ~100,000 seat stadium is really, really huge; and I can’t imagine a case where the home team will get to keep all of the ticket revenues.
Have to be some kind of split I imagine. Sure, its a long shot but it could happen…with the current system you just have be in the top 5 to 8 to get a home game. Boise St was too good to get a home game LOL!
(above is edited)
I like it because it satisfies Big 12 needs AND BIG and SEC. No byes…You wanted in to play? PLAY.
Are they “hosting” or is it part of the bowl system?
