saying you dont care at all about the roster just ranking on the coach, isnt the generic reputation matters …
again they gave this specific notes FOR HOUSTON…in a podcast for all teams- (top 25 for cbs) (big 12 for 3man weave)… they were not saying this to anyone else…
Geez of course reputation matters though we are also ranked because we have one heck of a projected starting back court with depth and a good veteran big who fits what we do.
The two go together for our ranking
No need to overplay the reputation angle to hammer home your opinion.
If we didn’t have returning players I doubt we get the same rank. Obviously Sampson garners the most respect but i think Shead, Roberts and the rest have something to do with it
We’ve obsessed a little too much over a dominant 5. I mean we’ve got Shead; Dunn gets points if he’s on the floor, 2 incredible distance threats in Cryer and Sharp for spacing — and add TA to that if he can get to 35%. I’m truly excited about this upcoming year.
The rosters never going to be perfect. There will always be holes/areas we could be better. I think we’ll be a better rebounding team and a better shooting team than we were last year and that’s enough to make me optimistic about how our season will go.
There has been obsession about a “dominant” 5 but some of us were hoping for a proven “functional” 5. I’m more upbeat with McFarland’s weight gain and Francis’ early dedication to offseason improvement but we still have a massive question mark at the 5.
Dunn’s rebounding last year was a full board/game lower than Tramon’s and LJ was .7 boards lower than Sasser. Roberts is supposed to be our 4 which will push him further away from the basket on many plays. Our rebounding next year could be worse than last year’s especially considering we will be facing more teams with the type of line ups we struggled with last year. I am extremely concerned about the rebounding, but we have CKS and he will get the most out of what we have.
Our defense with Cryer, Dunn and Francis is an unknown, but CKS will get Dunn and Cryer up to speed, we can always do the Bull’s three headed monster at the 5.
Hopefully the Coogs rebound and defend well in Australia. If either of those is lacking, especially the rebounding, then they need to shoot better which is hard to do on tired legs from busting your arse on defense. Good thing they have so many guards to keep everyone fresh.
sampson pretty much already said Javier is starting at the 5… anf you can tell from the practice photos released
jojo is guaranteed to play minutes as a freshmen, sampson also already confirmed that
its is guarantee we play some small ball… the fact kellen said some of our guards are “baby 4s” but the fact they are still seperated means it likely wont be a common thing…he would have just labeled them 4s
Think of it in terms of who can provide better spacing from the 4. Right now on paper that is Roberts, Walker and Arc. I’m not saying Roberts and Walker are going to be good shooters (time will tell on that), just that they would be allowed to shoot jumpers/3’s. I don’t know about McFarland or JoJo, can they shoot/would they be okayed to shoot? Our fours for the last several years have all had the ability to knock down jump shots/3’s.
mcfarland didnt shoot at all in HS… but does in some of his drills/workouts
tugler shoots 1 or 2 a game on the occasion that he was WIDE open (like daring him to shoot), and this is from the high school 3pt line
context jwan 4years ago was shooting more 3s than all our new bigs combined in HS… on our traditional lineups there is no way sampson would let any of them shoots…
but the lack of spacing might motivate sampson to push jojo/jwan to shoot
Francis and J’Wan to start and that will make for a great rebounding and defensive team.
Tugler rotates with them who will likely develop into a solid rebounder and defender.
If we can still rebound and defend with small ball then the more we will see it. That makes us really difficult to defend but it is also okay to have three really good guards to go with two bigs who can sweep the boards and protect the rim.
