Who do you think CMA will hire as Staff?

Ok this is a guess but I would like the following

OC: Kendall Briles- Run Briles very successful offense and has deep Texas ties.
DC- I know it’s a dream but I would love Orlando. However, I think it willl be tough for us to retain him. So who would be the next up and comer?
Strength & Conditioning- Unknown to me. I have heard maybe Maddog from the Mack era.
Support Staff- I would like for him to hire a well known High School Head coach. I would suspect that Katy’s coach is not listening so maybe go with Gary Koch at Memorial? Since Texas High School coaches pushed for Applewhite then I am sure they have recommendations.
Oline- Matt Maddoux a natural fit for Briles offense and a Coog.
Wide Receivers- Jason Phillips. Dude is a baller recruiter and good coach.

Thoughts?

I don’t think we will bring in Kendall. I think we will stick to an offense closer to what we have been running.
Would love to have Jason Philips back as WR coach.
Some people have been throwing out the name of the UT TE coach. They said he was a staffer the boosters and fans had hoped Vermin would keep.
Wouldn’t mind Casey staying and also coach Pope

Would not mind seeing Wyatt stay as WR coach. Our WRs got separation from the defender this year better than I have seen in years.

I am hearing Jason Phillips a lot and he would be great for WRs. I know he has that position now at Kansas, but would he be ok coming back here for a lesser job than when he left? I guess Applewhite could give him a co-offensive coordinator title if the new OC was cool with it.

UT guys from the Mack Brown era seem to stick to guys that have connections to Mack Brown. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Major do the same to fill out his staff.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Wyatt named OC or co-OC. He was Co-OC with Major at UT for 3 years. He has been an OC in the past for Southern Miss in 08-09 and Kansas in '00. It would be an easy transition. That’s also if he doesn’t become the head guy at Lamar.

JD mentioned in his periscope that Pope is probably staying or is retiring. Wouldn’t mind seeing him stay for continuity.

Name to watch for S&C may be Bennie Wylie who was S&C coach at UT from 2011-2013, but is currently running his own training business.

I know Naivar is supposed to go to Texas, but I’m surprised they let him stay if that’s the case. Maybe he takes the DC job?

Wonder if we try to get Adrian Mayes back to coach OL. He left us to coach under Withers at Texas State as the OL coach. Might not have the experience we want right now as it was his first year as OL coach.

If you do make Wyatt the OC; James Casey could slide into the QB coach role on offense; he was a QB in high school and at times for Rice. CMA would probably spend a lot of time with the QBs still and could oversee Casey’s progress.

TE coach will probably be a High School guy from the Houston area. Saw the Manvel coach’s name thrown around. Also saw Sean Salisbury throwing around the St Pius X coach’s name out there for CMA.

Maggitt Jr has been busting his tail on the recruiting trail the last couple of weeks. He’s got experience as a LB and DL coach, although at small schools. Hope he finds a spot somewhere on the staff even if he remains a GA. Good things in the future for him.

I’d think if Casey was going to be considered for QB coach, he’d be interim QB coach right now instead of interim TE coach. I think, if retained, he probably maintains a similar role – TEs, as the offense is constituted now, are a low-impact position, which would be perfect for a guy like Casey with zero coaching experience to start out with.

Kendall Briles won’t happen. Not being rude, just stating a fact.

I have heard Tosh Lupoi would be a great pick for DC. He coaches LBs at Bama. I believe CMA and him have met when CMA was studying offenses at Alabama after leaving UT under Mac.

Matt Mattox is mentioned a lot. He and Sterlin Gilbert are a package deal if that is the case.

What makes you so sure?

I’d prefer we stay away from anyone that was part of the Baylor coaching staff. Too many options out there and we don’t know who all was involved with the problems.

What makes me so sure is exactly what Jimmy Morris (The Rookie) said. We avoided the controversy that came with Art, and we will avoid the controversy that comes with Kendall or anyone associated with that Baylor staff. There are just to many good offensive minds out there, that we don’t need to and won’t touch Kendall Briles. Whether fair or not.

Mattox hiring would mean your OC would be Gilbert. I agree that would be a package deal. Herman may even decide to keep Gilbert. What is most likely and I just read this, is that Strong brings those two guys aboard at USF.

Tosh an excellent coach but a killer recruiter. Would be a huge get.

Not sure if this guy even wants to be an offensive coordinator but he has ties to Applewhite and has been a great recruiter at many stops.

A first time head coach needs to hire coordinators with previous coordinator experience IMO.

During the press conference, he did say that the setup would be like the previous coaching staff with Major on the sideline and the OC up in the booth. He mentioned that they would have discussions about play calling via the headsets, much like he did with Herman.

Major followed these 3 recently on twitter:

-Blake Gideon (Safeties Coach Western Carolina - former UT player)
-Archie McDaniel (LB coach SMU)
-Mark Smith (offensive analyst/recruiting coordinator SMU)

By the way, Van Malone, the DC at SMU, is a former NFL player and UT grad with deep ties to Texas high schools.
