Just looked it up, highest preseason ranking we’ve ever had was #2 in 1967. Had #3 twice in 1983 and 2022
For who? Need to trim one guard, Either Walker or Wilson. Probably wouldn’t do both. At that point it then becomes Lath unless we get a surprise of like McFarland or TA but I doubt either would bolt. Feels like the answer should be no but can scholarship players be moved to walk on status and then they just get paid NIL to cover tuition? Seems like a weird loophole that a lot of teams would be exploiting but you never know
I wont answer that or put a player’s name out there lol. Ill let coach decide that.
Kelvin wont leave this program hanging - even if he hangs it up himself. He has an option in his contract to serve as a consultant after he retires. No doubt he would use that option and help Kellen.
Based on all the Kelvin interviews I’m heard/seen over the past couple of years, it seems like the only part of this gig he doesn’t particularly enjoy (or enjoys less than other parts) is recruiting/portal/NIL. Kellen seems to be all over that stuff. I have very little doubt that after retirement, Kelvin will give Kellen space, but also be available to consult on Xs and Os and roster management. Kelvin will be one of the most valuable consultants ever.
Kelvin is really good at mid-game roster adjustments. Like how did we only lose by 3 to Duke without Shead, Tugler, and Arceneaux and no-one really stepping up and taking the team on their shoulder (J’wan did a great job trying). I’ll tell you how, Sampson tinkering here and then there and then here again.
I hope Kellen is the same but who knows. I’m not worried about the rest of it, Kellen will be great
I think they are building a repeatable process for the system, as long as you get the right kids. As coach say’s, they need to surrender to the plan. So, I think Kellen is going to do great and be able to run that process and manage games whenever that time comes. Hopefully 3 or so more seasons for coach!
I think getting really good at in-game adjustments is a matter of experience and getting the reps in making those calls.
yeah that, really knowing your players, identifying what the other team is showing, doing, and is capable of with their personnel, and just having the feel. I’m sure Kellen is already responsible for some of these jobs in his current position
It certainly doesn’t sound like the door is closed for Shead to return next year. If, in fact, he returns, I still think we need a backup PG, considering what happened when Shead went down with the ankle injury. Having a back up would give Shead rest throughout the season so he’s fresh for the tournament. Could the backup be Jefferson?
Something to keep an eye on is whether Sampson gives the backup PG duties to Jefferson. He handled the ball quite a bit in HS and could play a similar role for UH, just like Sasser. No way he sits on the bench all year without seeing the court.
Mercy should have been in the McDonalds game….that’s how good he is and the competition he played against was top notch….
Seen Mercy play several times the last couple of years……he is “him”.

From his mailbag where followers sent in questions, JD gives his opinion on how the Roster will be shaped n who he thinks will return.
Yes clear point always to let us know there is a good chance we return 4 starters which is what “likely” means.
I think Kellen is as ready as he’s ever going to be….
I also think he’s going to be an incredible coach and an outstanding recruiter.
As long as he has a great staff around him as his dad does now we won’t miss a beat.
There may be a year or two of growing pains( which means a 5 or 6 seed in the NCAA) but when he gets his footing?! Lookout because he is going to be a monster.
Also how bad baseball is now.
More from JD’s column. He thinks L.J. & Roberts return. With Shead, Mylik & Dunn leaving through their own routes
Edit: JD reitterates that he expects 4 Starters back w Shead being the lone exception n not returning.
Be a pretty pretty good Roster . The PG will take care of itself. I trust in CKS not all the maybe’s that get floated in here.
I think Kellen is still learning from dad. Every time we have to turn this roster over, make decisions based on staff or personnel he is still seeing things for the first time.
The next couple of years as a couple of dad’s assistants move on having him prepared with his staff is going to be so important.
I get what you’re saying and do not disagree but I think you can come up with things every year….things to say “ oh, he needs to see how to do this or that”.
At some point he is going to have to jump in the deep end.
also i point it out, that Jefferson being slotted into the Backup PG role… he isnt a PG. he is a SG, and is probably closer to a Wing than a PG
Kelvin is 36 wins shy of 800. Those close to him say he wants 800 really bad.
