I had a friend that was an ATO at UT, if I recall correctly his dues were around $5K
Not my sonâs fraternity but more like $8K just for dues - there are other charges as well. Check out their house, that they own, not UT-Austin
From what I have been told, even UTâs Greek life isnât as rowdy as it used to be
Itâs definitely still there, but itâs not like Alabama or even LSU
UTâs image has really changed over the past 2 decades. They really are close to being an actual Ivy-tier public if not already
Greek houses used to be spread out along MacGregor, then they went to Greek row along Cullen. Did they scrap that whole idea?
They werenât really visible during my time (2012-2016).
I did begin to notice them more around the end of 2015 & for sure noticed them recruiting & stuff my last year, but maybe it was because they had their offices at the Student Center, so they had to be there regardless.
I donât know the full history of Greek life at UH, but per @kae71463 , houses were spread out around the Houston area
Some had houses in McGregor, some in other areas. I was told by someone that McGregor no longer wanted fraternities in the neighborhood
When i was at UH from 2014-18, Delta Upsilon had some crappy house on OST I think
Itâs interesting.
Iâm getting conflicting reports on the internet.
Some say that Illinois has the nationâs largest Greek system, others Alabama.
Illinois probably does have the largest number of Greek Organizations, but with 11,000 active members on campus, Bama may have the largest Greek enrollment.
I guess it depends on whether you count chapters or active members.
Is sigma nu gone? That would surprise me. They provisioned a chapter the semester after KA did around 2010/2011 and seemed to have a lot of engaged and supportive alumni. I know sigma chi is back, they have a lot of alumni support as well. KA is gone, not sure about pike.
Sigma Nu has a long history on UH campus (my Dad was an active at UH and Lamar, and later a chapter advisor to Sigma Nu at UH for many years). Not sure what has happened to them in recent years though.
@Hill do you know the latest?
I was active in Sigma Nu at my undergrad college.
Illinois probably has the largest, but Alabamaâs Greek Life is essentially the identity of the school itself (other than football)
Illinoisâ identity isnât really associated with Greek life, more so their academic rankings. Same with many Big Ten schools and Ivy/Little Ivies
SEC Greek Culture and Big Ten culture are two different worlds
Thatâs pretty much what happened. That DU house used to be owned by KA back in the olden times from what I understand.
In the 1970s, SAE had a house on S. McGregor by what was then the railroad tracks. Sigma Chi had a house almost on the corner of S. McGregor and Scott St. Phi Kap had a house on S. McGregor close to Calhoun that the TKEs rented I believe for a few years when Phi Kap membership was down. Signa Nu had a house on Calhoun and the DUs were the house next door. Pikes used to have a house just south of Greenbrier and Holcombe on Dorrington St. I believe.
Man thatâs nice. What are the dues to live there?
I donât know but it ainât cheap, Iâm sure. Iâve walked past it a number of times and it looks just as nice walking past as it does in the pictures.
Damn, thatâs a nice house. I see them off McGregor when i walk the trails there.
Itâs a peaceful, sceneic pocket youâd never expect to find in the middle of 3rd Ward lol
I remember going to a party there - I think they had a Pat OâBriens party once a year? maybe. long time ago before the finger biting incident and the brother on brother bat bashing incident
Phi Kaps had only a few members living in the house. Two were selling pot out of the house and one was fixing his motorcycle in the chapter room. After the dealers were caught, the alums shut it down and leased to the Tekes for nine years I think. I was told this by one of the guys that was the last to live in the house before leasing to TKE. I think either Bob Planck or Willie Burns brokered the deal with Phi Kap for the Tekes to lease the house.
Yeah
McGregor was set up perfectly to be Greek Row for UH, and honestly if it werenât for us getting left behind after the fall of the SWC, McGregor Row wouldâve probably been a reality
Not to skirt the topic, but I honestly canât believe the SEC didnât even want to pick us up
I donât think so. There was zero momentum for something like that at the time, with our without the SWC breaking up
