Aquin,
I was a full time night school student during my first two years at UH. The Fraternity I joined made me feel welcomed and was the one and only connection I had to campus life. I did miss out on some of the daytime Pledge activities because of work, but they let me do other things. I spent many nights in the Frat house and had a blast with the Brothers doing weekend activities . How else can a young man meet and date college women and develop life long friends. If you do not go Greek you have a very small chance to find a wife out in the public. I know people who said they have plenty of time to find a wife. They ended up going to bars and other places after graduation. Virtually All the women were devorced with kids or some kind of problems that you may not want to deal with. I was lucky.I found my wife in my College at UH . We have been married 51 years. All I can say is choose wisely Guys/Ladies .
Go Coogs !
Huh?⊠what about classes, study groups, multiple other student organizations, internships, church? Plenty of other ways to meet your mate at college other than just greek.
We are talking around the issue. If the goal is a more traditional campus you must grow the Greek System. A bunch of individuals acting randomly will not create the atmosphere that is needed. There have been at least five houses mentioned. All are major national fraternities who were on this campus for 50-60 years. They got kicked off because they did something stupid. What a shock an undergraduate did something stupid. To recolonize five houses that have a UH tradition with a built in group of alumni makes all the sense in the world. It hasnât been done because the school has shown no element of forgiveness. You made a mistake try again. For all their faults frats create leaders. Each of those houses have alums that could get it done. What the frats grow from 10 to 15 and reattach the alums to the school.
OK Sukie,
My point is the ability to find a good match is more likely on a college campus . In the case of the full daytime(40 hrs)working student like me Greek provided my one only connection to the campus. In Night School, frequently to 10 pm, there was no study groups and no campus activities that late. Also, I think Church can be good source of a mate. However, once again the ratio of eligible Church goers to eligible mates on campus speaks to probability of success. I chose not to risk waiting until later in life .
I just offer this real life experience to fellow younger Coogs . You may want to roll the dice , but I felt life was too short to take this path. Good Luck to all .
lol no
The problem with UH is that the hazing tolerance is low compared to SEC schools that have a much higher hazing tolerance. Thatâs why they keep getting kicked off. Too many big mouths exposing hazing. This doesnât happen at SEC schools unless someone gets seriously hurt or dies
Secondly, as Iâve said above, real estate in Houston is way too expensive especially near campus. If UH had owned actual houses that were paid off before the market went crazy, then the fraternities wouldâve had equity to either stay or move into another house.
The money has left Greek life at UH. The dues are enough to pay for Bayou Oaks and general admin/social fees, but thatâs really it.
If UH had actual mansions, then youâre talking about potentially $5-10K in dues alone. I would probably assume most kids rushing at UH would not be able to afford that, and the kids that can afford it not all of them care about Greek life
What schools own mansions that are fraternity houses?
There is zero need for what constitutes real physical hazing.
Fraternity costs at UH are CHEAP compared to the top five fraternities at UT-Austin.
A handful of fraternities at UH had large houses or a house and willingly left them to go the apartments to be near the sororities.
Well âmansionâ has different meanings to different people, but pretty much everyone except TCU I believe
Even UNT has houses
UH Greek costs are cheap because thereâs not much overhead or upfront, such as having mansions.
Sigma Chi, the last fraternity to own the Calhoun Mansion, had dues more comparable to UT.
Back in the SWC, fraternity houses were spread out around the area including McGregor, but from what I understand, McGregor no longer wanted fraternities in their neighborhood
UT-Austin doesnât own the fraternity houses. I donât think TAMU does either.
Most mansions are not going to be owned by the university
The sigma chi âmansionâ is now a parking garage lol
âSigma Chi, the last fraternity to own the Calhoun Mansion, had dues more comparable to UT.â
I sincerely doubt that. I know. My wife and I pay UT-Austin fraternity dues. My kidâs fraternity can afford to spend $120K on their Christmas set up every year.
Where was the sigma chi âmansionâ? The only sigma chi house I knew of was on South MacGregor-ish towards the med center
Perhaps the top tier fraternities?
Not all UT fraternities are paying the same dues
I know and my kidâs isnât close to the highest.
Sigma Chi had a large house on Macgregor in the late 90s, same as Phi Kap. TKEs were right near Macgregor Park. Fun party circuit. Pikes had a place in midtown, didnât go there often.
Sigma Nuâs former house is now a parking garage. And it was brand new in the late 90s.
That was Sigma Nuâs when it was built.
It was Sigma Nu, but Sigma Chi took over
My friend was in the very last rush class for Sigma Chi before they got suspended
I agree with Hugh, Frontier Fiesta were some of the glory days of UH in terms of support. Since then, we embraced the commuter school and the low income working student. If we want to bring back the glory days of UH a focus on Greek life, it is a way to bring support, enthusiasm and money back to the campus. When you look at how big it is at some campuses like OU and UT, girls start preparing years before which sorority, when is rush and the thousands of dollars it takes to go through. It brings a ton of school spirit as every event is repped with Greek life. It could easily be a way to build the support we have been looking for.
