We are in this mess because the member schools wanted a paper tiger and some enterprising attorney made an argument that a judge bought.
We don’t want 50 different sets of NIL laws, so that means Congress. That may seem unrealistic, but once enough smaller schools in enough states gets poached, you might see something.
Either I missed a memo or I was just flat out wrong. I thought the intent of NIL was giving college athletes the ability to essentially ‘market’ themselves…appearing in ads/endorsing products or companies, putting their faces on shirts and getting a cut of the sales, etc, etc. Has it morphed into just shoveling cash from alumni wallets into kids’ pockets? The way it’s talked about in this thread and others it feels like a GoFundMe campaign for mercenary athletes now.
I understand that if XYZ Honda pays a player to appear in an ad the dealer is gonna get some of that back through my buying his car. That’s fine, we already pay for their other advertising anyway.
I’ve given all I’m gonna give…tickets to the big sports for about five decades, CP donations which I’ve bumped up regularly, 50/50 Club (previously 46ers as well), and money to the COE and UHAA.
Eventually the schools in the tier below blue bloods like Clemson, A&M, Georgia, Oregon, Washington, LSU, Ole Miss types etc will outbid the traditional blue bloods and then the blue bloods will want to put in regulations.
This is the most realistic chance that can beat the blue bloods at their own game.
The collectives are NOT NIL. They are a way to pay players that those under the table morphed into “NIL” in name only. That is why I will not contribute.
Also the revenue sharing mentioned above is in addition to NIL, not a part of it. It will be regulated. However, how many schools can really afford to shift $20 million of their budget into paying players when most are already losing money on athletics with all that goes into supporting the programs, facilities, players (insurance, etc…) This was the plan by the B1G and SEC to force other conferences down IMO.
The collectives need to be banned and NIL allowed only as NIL (ie. the player actually has to appear in a commercial, make an appearance, allow usage of their name in a video game, or actively promote the school on their social media)
They said players may not be prevented from earning money is correct. However at least one justice wrote after that it was not intended to allow pay for play, but to allow them to use their likeness to earn money.
A valid contract to be in a commercial can not be limited (or autographs, etc…).
Allowing just giving players money to play for a school can be limited as that was not covered in the court case as earning money outside of school as other students can do.
How many other students have alumni just giving them money to attend a school outside of scholarships and grants? IF there are, then there would be a case for the collectives.
You people complain about Tech taking a Coach and then trash on NIL. This is the name of the game! I’ve been reading this site for weeks without commenting, but tonight set me off
You may hate Tech, but they have a massive (maybe biggest in B12) NIL fund and their fans donate big time to it. Add in a few 40 year old near billionaires that played football there and they are buying what they want. Have you seen their facilities? Their new stadium? Makes ours look like crap
We have step up as a fan base or we will stay in the B12 football basement until further notice
Wood left for money sure, but he also left one of the best recruiting cities in the US for West Texas… tells you all you need to know about how far behind we are
The fact that we’re behind isn’t new. It was one of the knocks used against us in keeping us out of the B12 earlier. But I doubt it had anything to do with our DC job-hopping. Their facilities are great, but you also can’t really compare them to our work-in-progress
If the school and AD are serious about taking steps forward, the answer isn’t to keep bashing people over the head about it. I’ve pointed out Tech’s approach in the past, because they’ve done a good job of collaborating between their scholarship and NIL programs. We have what seem to be isolated efforts that seem to be working well for basketball but not so much for football.
Cougar Pride and our NIL efforts need to get aligned or we’ll always be leaving money on the table.
But I will say, if I’m Wood, and you gave me more money with a bigger NIL pool and told me I didn’t have to be the primary recruiter (Tech has a full recruiting staff under their coordinators)… I’d take it too
We have a chance to catch up to these schools, but it will have to come from the thousands of successful Coogs we have in our alumni base and not just TF
I haven’t checked everyone, but are you sure they are the same people. I know I have not trashed any player performance or coach leaving. (also ties back to the does NIL only mean you get to complain and season ticket holders, facility donors, scholarship donors are not allowed to?)
Also everyone needs to keep in mind “the game played” is changing next year with revenue sharing, so a ton more money is about to get thrown at the players from the schools instead of just the fans. Means the schools will need more money from the fans for their expenses.
That’s it in a nutshell. Tech’s attendance is twice what ours is, their budget is about 50% larger than ours, and they have the donors to give every player 25 thousand in NIL.
If my wife found out that I had given any of our hard earned money to something like this, then we would probably have a RIOT in the house.
I give a little money to the law school school and to UH athletics, but I’m afraid that paying pro athletes simply isn’t a household spending priority for us.
I don’t dispute that NIL is important, but it’s going to have to come from people like Tilman that have the resources.
What is it going to take for you to get smart and say something substantial, t-non? I mean, really? On this friggin’ board, too???
U of H fans are NOT ‘cautious’ with their money (maybe YOU need to be a little more cautious…as I could use a couple more season tickets). But most either just don’t care enough, aren’t vested enough or we’re otherwise vastly outnumbered in ultra-traditional support when compared to schools like ATM. We’re a commuter school, kiddo. We LOVE our Coogs (I’ll even choose to damn ALL the bluebloods, as far as I’m concerned), but it is what it is – even if we DO, in fact, have plenty of ‘old money’ donors out there (another claim you foolishly defied in another post).
And I promise you, ATM supporters are not reeling over whatever support they gave back in 2022! Maybe your small handful of co-working Aggie T-shirt fans are, but if you’re a TRUE supporter, you’re gonna give no matter what. Winning and losing isn’t the point…pride is, and it’s why WE and THEY give! And they’re (we’re) not gonna lose that!
So, please…stop with all the nonsense and unsubstantiated claims. Or better yet, try and, at least, back your s**t up!!! It’s friggin’ exhausting!
…and, of course, this is your response…get over it! What appalls me is that you are a season-ticket holder in multiple sports, yet have the attitude and mindset of a fly-by-night T-shirt fan. This is not the support this institution needs nor one that I can respect as being a true supporter to begin with. I mean, why even go to the games or better yet, come on here and post ‘comments’ instead of insight to back up the comments? Are you just wanting to hear yourself talk?
You instead, get offended.
Look, I’m sure you’re a swell guy, but I don’t like delusional posters that spew nonsense, stuff that isn’t true, and then, don’t back it up, especially when you’re called out on it. You, instead, respond to backlash feedback with, ‘it’s a free country’ or ‘I know you are, but what am I?’
