I hadn’t been up close and personal with them until our basketball game against them at Toyota in December.
I always thought the swaying thing with their fight song looked pretty cool, then I heard the guy behind me singing the words. It’s 75% obsessing over UT and 25% gibberish. Not so cool anymore.
And they hiss at officials when they disagree with them. I didn’t know about that until seeing it. And I’m still taken back for how weird it is.
You read it correctly it’s a non binding recommendation. And it’s not some crazy “get rid of athletics thing” either that the folks who just love to be grouchy about young people(perhaps envious of their own lost youth) or argue for arguments sake are trying to make it out to be.
They’d still be the flagship university of the state of Texas and get the lion’s share of higher education funding. Would they have as many world class degree programs? Who knows. But I’m pretty confident that, even without athletics, they’d still be a more attractive destination for students than Alabama.
Without athletics Bama would be a much better destination hands down.
UT would become more obscure without big time sports as would many schools unless your a top notch selective low enrollment private like Harvard, Yale etc
Why do you think UT tried to screw us by leaving us out of the new big12? Well, conf affiliation affects perception and popularity etc which they didn’t want us to have.
If big time sports didn’t matter then it wouldn’t be happening.
Again ask around and ask them to put their hand on a Bible when asking a UT grad if they would be ok dropping all sports and that it doesn’t matter.
Why is Fla st trying to leave the Acc?
If bigtime sports doesn’t affect perception ,notoriety and attracting students then why do they do it? For fun? Bama or Lsu and UT would diminish without big time sports.
Now I get it. I wonder who’ll be UT in the SEC? Maybe they can come up with a rivalry trophy over it and whoever wins it has the right to be called UT in that given sport until the next game.
Notice the number 4 reason which markets the schools perception
Ask a Notre dame grad as to how football big time helped ND. Without it, no one hardly would know what Notre dame is or where it is or care to go there much. Football big time put ND on the map and made it popular.ND was a poor , very poor, small Catholic school then Knute r in the 20s or so won big then over time ND got money from football and built a destination school. UT Austin knows it can’t thrive without big time sports just like UH, LSU , Bama etc.
Yeah, football is what is holding Baylor and Texas Tech up today. Ut would be a fraction of what it is today without sports and a significantly reduced puf.
Obscure is relative. Students who want a good education and excellent job prospects would know UT without athletics. The students who would choose Alabama over UT simply because UT, in this hypothetical, doesn’t have a football team, aren’t as interested in academics.
The moved goalpost of subtracting athletics AND PUF funding would still give UT a higher budget than Alabama and give UT more academic superiority.
So true, only reason people go to tech is bc they hung onto big time sports. The gov at the time got them into the new big12 over us. Why? Well bc of what I said , it matters being big time sports.
We’re in a good spot now with the big12 and Khator gets it.
UT would diminish and have to cut enrollment further and become more like a private which would further make them obscure then less popular. I’m not talking the hiring process bc being honest I’d hire from most any school if the applicant fits which is what my company does. We have Stephen s Austin, Sam Houston etc and they are great. My point is notoriety, popularity and perception of a school which big time sports helps. Bama or Lsu don’t have great academics but kids want to go there bc sec/sports. UT would struggle without big time sports not that UT isn’t good academically but it would have to spend millions saying here we are in Austin, please apply.
Ask a UT grad how athletics matter
If big time sports don’t matter, why did UT keep us out of the new big12 or why doesn’t UT just advocate us to the Sec? Well it’s bc perception, popularity and etc. They prob hate we’re big12. Bama which people say sucks is elevated by sports.
I have and it doesn’t matter to some and matters to others. But that’s not the question that was initially proposed.
It’s an exercise in what ifs. Right now with athletics UT has a cap on acceptance to only automatically accept 6% of the top high school students. Without athletics maybe they’d go to 10% like every other university in the state has to. That’s a pretty big buffer.
Anecdotally my son’s friends who ended up at UT are there with no regard to UT’s athletics programs and chose UT because the private schools didn’t offer scholarships. That’s 30 kids out of whatever UT’s fall 2023 freshman class was but I’m pretty positive that academically inclined students go to UT regardless of whatever standing it has in athletics.
That being said, there’s plenty of UT alumni whose sole connection to the university is athletics. Just like, without UH football I’d have no connection to the university anymore. Those UT fans definitely don’t want to get rid of athletics.
But it’s all moot. Unlike most universities, UT athletics pays for itself. This whole premise started with whether UH funding of athletics is a good return on investment for the student fees since UH athletics would be in a deeper hole without them.
When you say you asked and some said it doesn’t matter what these people aren’t admitting is sports helped the rep that got them to go there. Again I’m from La and Lsu is a draw bc of the sec. Yes kids can attend UT and Lsu but they are going there bc the overall rep whether they attend games or care.
Again look at ND football and how it transformed the school from the 1920s to now.
