Should Stand-ups be fact checked

Hasan Minhaj confirms he lost 'The Daily Show' job after 'New Yorker' backlash

I’m kind of torn on this one. While i think its obvious that comics are entertainment, when they share personal stories we assume those come from reality. The made up part of a comic act shouldn’t be the personal story.

No. It’s all embellished at a minimum.

It’s an “act”, not a “fact”, but his dynamic may have been different due to the Daily Show’s content riding the line between facts and comedy.

This was his stand up material not Daily show stuff.
His backlash seems unique but i think its because he was making up stories about racial discrimination that he got backlash. But if he made up a story about how poor he was as a kid no one would have fact checked it.

Yeah,I knew it was his stand-up, I heard the story when it broke.

Who is going around fact checking comedians in the first place?
A finger wagging reporter.

And yes, he’s allowed to tell a made up story if he wants. It’s an act.

From the article:

Minhaj shared that his other comedian friends and mentors, including Ramy Youssef, Mike Birbiglia, John Mulaney, and even former Daily Show host Jon Stewart, reached out to him in the aftermath. He recalled spending hours on the phone with them. “I remember Jon called, and he said, ‘Why the f— are they doing this? And who does this benefit?'"

The comedian further clarified to EW at the time, “All my stand-up stories are based on events that happened to me. I use the tools of stand-up comedy — hyperbole, changing names and locations, and compressing timelines — to tell entertaining stories. That’s inherent to the art form. You wouldn’t go to a haunted house and say, ‘Why are these people lying to me?’ The point is the ride. Stand-up is the same.”

Exactly.

If the heavyweights that weighed in feel how I do, then I’m feeling pretty good about my position, having lived that life for so long.

It it was on the Daily Show itself, sure, but other than that, who cares? Obviously the Daily Show did not want the connection.

I’m changing the title, the better question, should Comics be fact checked? When we don’t even care to fact check politicians

My answer is still the same.
