A relatively unheralded recruit, Romero opened his freshman season as Houston’s closer before becoming a rotation mainstay midway through that spring. He looked better than ever this fall after improving his conditioning, making himself a potential first-rounder. If Louisville two-way star Brendan McKay gets selected as a first baseman, Romero could be the first college left-hander taken in the 2017 Draft.
Romero’s fastball works at 92-93 mph and peaks at 95 with little effort in his delivery. His low-80s slider has good bite and shows flashes of becoming a plus pitch. His changeup is more of a work in progress because he hasn’t needed it much to this point in his career.
Romero’s indifferent approach to conditioning led to him going undrafted out of high school and getting suspended for a couple of weeks at the start of his sophomore season. Scouts were impressed at how much better he looked heading into his junior year. If he stays in shape and continues his previous success, he’ll be the Cougars’ highest pick since Brad Lincoln went fourth overall in 2006.
