Random topic. Outside of #HTownTakeover I don’t feel we have ever had traction on branding our school, especially for local Houston talent with football. Obviously winning can change this, but I wonder if there was a way to brand ourselves, especially for local talent to want to represent their City.
Something like answer the call. Your City needs you. Batman kept coming to mind with UH logo in the sky set against the downtown backdrop.
I feel it’s because there has to be belief & confidence behind the slogan/marketing campaign that it’ll resonate & catch on with your intended audience.
After the massive impact of the #HTownTakeover campaign (and backing it up with the highest recruiting class since the SWC days, 5* Ed Oliver & by beating #3 Oklahoma in the szn opener), things started to unravel with the loss at Navy, then at SMU, which ultimately culminated with TH lying on National Media that he wouldn’t leave the program prior to the dagger-in-the-heart loss at Memphis
…then came the shocking & disgraceful way in which TH left, and just like that, the entire momentum & credibility this campaign had garnered fell flat on its face.
I don’t think the university has felt bold enough to roll out something similar ever since.
There was the whole #SackAve deal, but that was always questionable when you considered the 2021 SOS, and how it fizzled out with 3rd & Belk.
Then Pezman’s HoUSton thingy (did it ever catch on? I never really see ppl using it online), but was never really announced as a proper marketing campaign, even tho Pez became irritated at Pawd Slamma Jamma’s, Andy Yanez, when asked about when Football was going to have it’s own rallying slogan like Basketball’s #ForTheCity.
TL;DR: A marketing slogan is more likely to work when stars align with winning, good recruiting, team confidence & swagger…something we haven’t had for a while.
And completely embrace who our University is named after, the HOUSTON family.
The Houstons’ were a noble Scottish family and they even owned a castle outside of Glasgow before being displaced in the English Civil War which led Sir John Houston to immigrate to the colonies.
Our University’s crest, my avatar, is a variation of the Houston family crest.
I also find it odd that both the city of Houston AND the University of Houston do not have a sister city connection to our Scottish roots.
UH should definitely have an alliance or parthership with the University of Glasgow or even Edinburgh!
Our city, and University, is named after one their most prominent families!
I like Galen Robinson’s “Houston vs Everybody”. It embraces the fact the we are always the consummate underdogs. We always do best when we play with a chip on our shoulder.
