I have seen a few posters talk about us having a pro style smash mouth offense. I was wondering, since this isn’t 1976, who in the NFL runs that type of offense? There are some teams that have better running games than others, but most teams have a spread style wide open offense.
Pro style just means more under center. Pro style tends to use TEs more as well. We just haven’t been able to throw the ball much at all. Run game has looked a lot better.
It is not the offense. We don’t have the QB or the OLs to run anything.
It is going to take a few years. I was disappointed with defense they have taken a step back. BUT maybe OU isn’t that good and Rice is awful.
This isn’t 1980, we don’t have a “few years”. If we try that approach we will lose our best players to the portal every year.
Our best players left last year. We made a really bad business decision with Dana. We are going to pay for it.
Fritz is a good coach he will win here.
You can’t fit a square peg in a round hole & that’s what we are doing with our offensive philosophy - we shouldn’t be this bad on offense
Hard to run any O when your offensive line has a combined 6 starts entering the season.
I don’t think an air raid offense would take long to implement. But I don’t know if our receivers, other than Manjack, are up to it. But then again, there’s only one way to find out.
We ran huddle and under center vs Oklahoma then abandoned it. Then followed up by replacing half of the run plays with QB draws and sprints. Not sure why.
We do not have the line, or the skill position players for any offense that is ‘smashmouth.’ We’ve excelled with what at the time were considered gadget offenses, the veer and the run-n-shoot. Both allowed lesser talented teams to do well with untraditional blocking schemes and routes. The only name for what we run now is ‘bad’ or ‘just a bunch of plays.’
Can’t approach this with that mindset. With the way the transfer portal is set up nowadays, you can rebuild your whole team. No need to wait for guys to sit out.
OU is definitely not good. They don’t really have a QB either. They’re going to be destroyed against the good SEC teams. And yeah I think Rice really is bad. They’ll fire their coach this offseason I think.
We absolutely have a few years. We’ll lose some talent to the portal the next couple years but we’ll retain plenty and bring in even more.
Before anyone loses their heads, take a look at Colorado under Deon. With him bringing in a bucketload of 4 and 5 star transfers, he went 4-8 his first year. They are 3-1 so far this year. If it took Deon that long with the star quality players he brought in, why would anyone really think Fritz should win a lot in his first year bringing in 63 new players, not nearly the same quality as Deon’s?**
We had some really good players last year that are now starting at other P4 teams. Golden is the star receiver for the whorns. Unijii is starting for UCLA. I can’t remember all the names, but a bunch of our players from last year are playing for other P4 teams, and a bunch of others are playing for G5 teams. Then there are others that I haven’t seen picked up anywhere.
When Fritz came in, most of the really good players were already taken and CWF had to cobble together a team with the 63 new player he could find, often just to have a needed body. Given time, he will build us a really good team and I think it will be built on a foundation of high school recruits he develops. The only question is if we can fight off the rich teams with many millions more than we have in their NIL bags.
** Regardless, I will continue to predict an undefeated season every year.
Well put, Mike
Prime didnt go 1-11, that was the previous coach.
I stand corrected. will correct.
Idk what some peoples expectations are! We have won 2 conference championships in the last 28 years?? To be an elite program it takes a little time to build.
Not to diss Fritz, but for those of you “ in the know”, were any other coaches interviewed for the job ??
Cannot be accomplished with continuous turnover.
Name one person who is complaining because we aren’t “elite.”
Hello Mr strawman.
How about fielding a team that can score 1 point? Is that too much to ask.
Jeez.
