I’m half day late on this but I just now saw it.
Just an iconic nickname. I think it is better than:
The Fab Five (1991 Michigan recruiting class)
The Doctors of Dunk (1980 Louisville team)
Split the difference, I think Fab Five is better (and more malleable to other scenarios in life) while Phi Slama Jama is better than Doctors of Dunk (in part because their legacy is better arguably though, of course, the DoD actually won a title.
Phil Slama Jama is iconic and the greatest name in college basketball in the entire world
Fab Five is an easy one to get used in other contexts so I would give it a strike. Either way though, Phi Slama Jama is going to be top of my list.
Fab Five is just an appropriation of the Fab Four. Doctors of Dunk was an appropriation of Doctor J. Phi Slama Jama is totally original.
I thought Doctors of Dunk was an extension of Darrell Griffith’s nickname, “Dr Dunkenstein”, which was a clear ripoff of Parliament/George Clinton’s “Dr Funkenstein”.
You’re right. I had forgotten that. I even have a copy of that album. It’s really good.
Direct from the Mothership!
Phi Slama Jama is one of the things that connects a little bit of Houston history with BYU history. Dave Rose, BYU’s prior coach, was part of that team.
I’m in my 20s, but I remember when Dave Rose was hired in the early 2000s my dad told me all about Phi Slama Jama.
Go Coogs!
Is Bonk still around?
Would be cool to do a tribute for him on a PSJ night
Living in San Fran.
