Pesik/840 Sports Classic

Just checked my YouTube feed this morning and this vintage 840 Sports Rob Gray highlight reel popped up. I’m sure it’s a ton of work, but I miss these videos @pesik!

Thoughts from rewatching this video 8 years later:

  • I’m not sure we’ve had this confident of an offensive player since Rob. Every time he touched the ball, he knew he was going to score. I keep thinking Sharp is our next Rob Gray. Just needs a little more playmaking beyond 3 point shooting.
  • Hofheinz was so freaking dark!
  • I think my favorite highlight in this video was Rob confidently shooting right over 7’6" Tacko Fall without batting an eye.
  • :fire: choice for background track!

Yup, that’s Hofheinz Pavilion. Lots of empty seats. I hope UH never goes back to that apathy.

Free throw by Davis against Michigan still haunts. Gray would have taken his team to the Final Four.

Devin balled out in that game but just couldn’t close it from what I remember…

Scored 17 and had 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. He was 9/11 from the FT line prior to missing that last one.

So, so dark! I remember it at the time, felt like we were playing in a dingy basement

Rob is the best scorer Kelvin has had at Houston and its not really close tbh

Gray was fearless and wanted the ball in his hands for the final shot. Not all great players have that psychological makeup.

There have been many great players with that special quality, but the one that immediately comes to my mind is Larry Bird. Obviously, Jordan and Bryant are also two of the best ever.

I dont think you can develop into a Rob Gray. You either are that way or you arent. I would bet Rob Gray was a Rob Gray in high school. He definitely already was when he hit our campus

I would say that Caleb Mills was pretty close to that his first season at UH.

I believe many of our players are affected by two things. Energy expelled on the defensive end, and a fear (at least early on in their career) of failing CKS. I see way, way too many open shots being passed on.

Rob was a bucket getter - rare combo of offensive talent and aggressiveness

Also goes for those who complain about capacity
