Writer Kirk Bohls is urging Jerry Jones to hire Ryan Day to become Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys. If I was Day, I would strongly consider. College football is a mess right now with the transfer portal and NIL. Every player is an annual free agent. A college head coach has so much more to worry about than coaching the game. Recruiting, both high school and transfers, player retention, fund-raising, general alumni and big money donors, fielding a competitive team, and of course, beating Michigan.
The pinacle for most coaches is to coach in the NFL. To get to the NFL, Day may reason he will put up with Jones, the General Manager, and Jonesâ media obsession. Day does not have to worry about recruiting, NIL, Transfer Portal, alumni, fundraising and Michigan. Day will have to adjust to NFL parity. He will not automatically have the most talented team when they come out of the dressing room.
Leaving OSU for the Cowboys? Hmm generally I would say yes but the problem is one Jeremiah Jones. Guy is a head case and is constantly interfering. Al Davis 2.0.
If Jerry wants him he might as well take it, go make a zillion dollars and if it doesnât work out he can have his pick of college jobs. No lose situation for Day. Iâd love to see him give the finger to Ohio St fans for wanting him fired.
Jones is not averse in hiring college coaches. He hired Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer from college. He is courting Coach Sanders. I think the perception is that Jones can better control someone without NFL experience. Or, perhaps there are NFL coaches that understand how Jones runs his franchise and want no part of it.
There is an allure to college coaches to succeed at the NFL level. Many have tried. Nick Saban, Urban Meyer and Chip Kelly have tried and failed. Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh have been successful at both. Salary is definitely important, but these coaches strive for respect from their peers. You can only get so much respect for winning in college. Winning in the NFL gets the utmost respect.
