If the Oilers would have won it all that year, they’d still be in Houston today. Buddy Ryan couldn’t get out of his own way.
So a good friend is in this video. Hard to believe what happened to the team/players.
Not even close GrayTheCoog. With every great NFL franchise there is a great owner. Look it up that is the common denominator.
The adams family synonymous with a term that I do not want to use on Easter. The daughter is now doing the same thing to Tennessee.
adams did what he did by own doing. He is the reason why the Oilers did not win and moved. The Spanos family is equally as bad.
Adams was a business man thru and thru. Period.
Is Kraft a business man?
Is DeBartolo a business man?
How many more business men do you want me to go over that have had success with Super Bowls?
adams like spanos with the chargers never cared about the team but themselves.
It is Easter so let’s be civil.
Biggest mistake by an horrible owner was to hire Buddy Ryan. Buddy Ryan was a great D.C. but anybody’s that know about evaluating character knew that BR and the Run and Shoot was the worst possible “marriage” Unfortunately it was the case from the season’s start. There is nothing wrong about having different personalities in fact it can be highly positive. Right from the get go adams knew this would not work. You can be a good business man but it does not mean squat when it comes to sport. adams wanted to let know everyone who was the boss. Instead of delegating like the owners I previously mentioned he set his entire football operation on fire. The rest is history and just reaffirms the adams inaptitude at being a successful nfl owner. I have friends in Tennessee and adams own daughter learned well from her father. The titans found themselves with the #1 draft pick…it is not happening by mistake.
They undermined Jack Pardee’s authority by hiring Buddy behind his back. This after blowing a big lead really caused players to dismiss him and not take him serious as the head coach. Then Buddy whining about the offense in the press and creating a divide in the team between the offense and the defense. This was bad enough without the other outside drama surronding this team.
Adams hired a CPA to run his football team. He couldn’t care less about the Super Bowl. All he wanted was a tax write off.
This is why I cringe when nfl owners are asking the tax payers to pay for their new “stadium/toy” toupeeadams had a choice to hire a DC. He choose Ryan. History proves that he was 100% wrong to do so.
Having taxpayers paying for stadiums is BS. Owners have $. They can pay for their own crap. The owners certainly like profits.
Ladd Herzeg was Houston Oilers GM at that time. There may have been worse GMs in the history of Houston professional sports, but I can’t think of any.
Bingo!
My sister was in media relations for the Oilers back then. She wanted to leave and work for HSE but I made her stay so she would qualify for a NFL pension.
I called working for the Oilers “das boot” because they worked in a windowless basement and they kept getting hit with depth charges. For the record, she enjoyed Buddy Ryan.
Your sister must be a trooper!!
I recall in the early 1990s that when I renewed my Oilers season tickets, I literally had to go to the Adams Resources office to pay for them. I didn’t go to a separate Houston Oilers ticket office.
That’s where the Ticket Office was located, the APC building on Fannin. Years ago the building had a cafeteria and was a designated fallout shelter during the 60s.
That explains everything. That building was ugly. I always thought it looked like it would survive an atomic blast. You’re saying that’s exactly what it was designed for.
No the GM was Mike Holovak and Floyd Reese was his assistant. Ladd Herzeg had been fired by 1993.
Bud Adams blamed the R&S for blowing the lead when it was Jim Eddy’s defense and the special teams that did it. If you achieve 38 points in a game, that should be enough to win. Our Secondary regularly got burned during that period. Happened against Denver, Buffalo, Cincinnati, and KC.
Sorry sport. I was responding to the CPA comment. Ladd Herzeg was the CPA, not Mike Holovak or Floyd Reese. Herzeg was well known to save every penny of Bud Adams’ money, at Bud Adams order, I might add.
spanos did the same thing that toupee adams did…with the same result.
toupee adams should have never hired Ryan. Knowing Ryan’s “bubbly” personality any executives would tell you this was the worst mistake that toupee adams did. God knows if toupee adams had made the right hire. Just maybe the Oilers would still be in Houston.
toupee adams thought he was bigger than the Oilers. That was his downfall.
