If FOX truly wants to enter that Florida market and ESPN wants to keep FSU & Clemson as inventory, why couldn’t they both work something out that benefits the entire Big 12 conference?
Hell… imagine if the Yormark pulls off getting FSU, Clemson AND Miami. That would be nuts!
I think the SEC is done. What does FSU or Clemson get them they don’t already have? B1G would really find UNC tempting. IDK about UVA or any other ACC school being a “must have” for the B1G.
UNC is the crowned jewel in the ACC (unless you count Notre Dame), so they can really go anywhere they want which is why they’ve haven’t made noise until very recently. UNC is letting FSU/Clemson find the holes in the legal contracts so that UNC can slip right through without hurdles.
UNC has the brand and the prestige despite lacking TV numbers which is mostly due to bad football. However, I’m sure annual matchups against marquee SEC/B1G teams would boost their ratings quite a bit.
That being said, I agree that UVA isn’t anything extraordinary, more so just complimentary. I also agree that the SEC isn’t in dire need of adding FSU or Clemson especially if it dilutes the revenue shares for other schools.
Yormark could make something happen…SEC is not going to take FSU and Clemmie. Florida and SC and their allies will vote to keep them out…BIG membership attitude is "We have too many already!! " so it doesnt seem likely getting bids from them, either. Yormark could put a package together where ESPN/FOX help Big 12 give FSU and Clemmie a new home thats stable. Them joining Big 12 solves a lot of problems for everybody.
That is reason not to add FSU and Clemmie… We dont need “Texas and Okie junior” coming in like they are better than all of us and saying they deserve more than current members… All this ACC is imploding is nothing but talk…They have 17 members, they arent going anywhere, even if they lose a school or 2…and maybe they end up not losing anyone. we’ll see…
I’m not sure if it matters too much but i think smoo wont be a member until July and Cal/Stanford until August. This might be why everything is playing out now.
To be fair, Texas and Oklahoma did deserve more in the Big 12.
That being said, it’s imperative to understand that the UT/OU-era Big 12 was indeed a different era in terms of the overall media deal market compared to what it looks like now.
Even when UT/OU first left the Big 12, the ACC and PAC12 both looked stable while everyone assumed the Big 12 was pretty much dead as night at that particular time.
Now so much has changed. The PAC12 died. The ACC is near collapse. The Big 12 is as strong as ever and even has some leverage going forward.
Meaning what?? … Clemson’s day as a top “brand” has already come and gone…Florida State? PLEASE…We are 13-2-2 against them and have owned them forever…If they DO join, they will get beat in our league the same way OU and Texas got beat when THEY were members…Certainly they would increase our value and with worries about comparison to SEC, BIG, i can see where their addition helps us.
Where FSU and Clemmie would help with TV ratings is in areas of country where Big 12 doesnt have a strong presence now, like deep south and Atlantic seaboard…FSU and Clemmie would make Big 12 a major player in Florida and the Carolinas…we are already a major player in Southwest and Midwest, and soon the Rockies. Adding 2 such schools would give Big 12 P3 status…
So, the PUF fugging money that got them there wasn’t enough of an advantage?
It’s the old, you won gold, so let’s just give you silver and bronze too…
FSU and Clemson leaving ACC to join Big12 feels like a lateral move at best.
The money is not that much more. They’re already the 2 of the 3 best teams in ACC at this time.
I don’t see big money teams moving around unless it improves their long-term profit dramatically. These 2 universities wouldn’t have the lawsuits against ACC if the powers that be (aka boosters) didn’t already see themselves as big money.
