No. 1 Predictor of Being Mass Casualty Offender

Per START, a University of Maryland organization -

His group found that among extremists “the No. 1 predictor of being classified as a mass casualty offender was having a U.S. military background – that outranked mental health problems, that outranked being a loner, that outranked having a previous criminal history or substance abuse issues.”

Long but chilling read of these types of
people. Beliefs in conspiracy, government is the enemy, coming civil war, etc.

Be careful. Some folks on here will take the research personally and get offended.

The take is, per usual, incredibly stupid.

Home grown terrorists.

Interesting article. I hadn’t read anything about links between military experience and future domestic extremism/terrorism…but it does make some sense.

But, beyond just military experience, it seems to me that it misses the ultimate predictors of being a mass shooter:

Gender: Male [98% of mass shooters are male]
Race: White [anywhere from 54% to 65% (depending on the parameters of the various studies) of mass shooters are white, with many of the “unknown” in data likely adding to those totals]
Ideology: Right Wing/Conservative [of the documented acts domestic extremists, studies show as much as 95% are far-right in origin]

If we’re going to talk about it, let’s not sugar-coat the truth. That’s what multiple data analyses have proven.

Would we have to compare the racial %’s to the overall racial %’s of the country to determine if that is a factor?

Seems like something that makes sense to evaluate. That said, given the numbers cited…" Race: White [anywhere from 54% to 65%…", and the countries racial breakdown, race doesn’t seem to be much of a factor.
