I’d be surprised if this is enforced anytime soon if ever.
Opinons are like a lot of things, everyone has one
This opinion was issued by Richard Griffin as general counsel for the NLRB. He was an Obama appointee and there’s zero chance of him not being replaced by Trump when his term ends at the end of October 2017. Griffin is a huge union guy and the opinions he has issued since being appointed in 2013 have been radical to say the least. Also, there are currently 2 vacancies on the NLRB that Trump will fill, giving the board a republican majority. Once that happens, you can bet your next paycheck the board will completely ignore Griffin’s opinions until his term ends and he’s ousted. Based on some of the opinions I’ve read, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Of course anyone pro union would lean that way. If any of these schools were forced to pay students athletes as employees, it would have to be new recruits and not current players since they applied and agreed to the terms of compensation being food, housing and education. Might as well say that volunteers/interns everywhere should suddenly get paychecks.
