I’m not all that educated on how NIL works. I know we have Linking Coogs that facilitates opportunities for our athletes to make money through partnerships with businesses. I’m curious, though, how other schools are basically paying players and why we aren’t.
We have no one donating
If we learned anything from game one it is that our fans MUST support our NIL initiative. We need to be giving money to NIL to be used for recruiting and retaining the defensive and offensive lines. We can’t compete in the Big12 (or at any level) with JC transfer linemen.
Every school is still trying to figure the best approach to NIL. UH’s problem is it does not have a wide enough donor base to compete. The same rich people are called upon to contribute. That is why many of us have suggested to go outside UH’s traditional donor base and tap corporate Houston. With the new staff in the Athletic Department, that is what they have been charged to do.
They don’t go to the games so why do u think they will donate to Nil lol y’all are funny
I did not get season tickets because the price went up and it is just not fun to go anymore. I spent Saturday with friends watching all kinds of games, eating better food, using clean bathrooms all while sitting in the AC and in comfortable seating. I got to change the channel and it was nice. Now, I do go to a couple of games every year, so you want me to pay my tuition (already did), pay for grad school (currently enrolled), pay for tickets and game food and parking, and pay the athletes. Nope.
Eventually this minor league will be official and I can start watching the nfl.
I switch to nd vs A&M at half time
They have to go the Corporate route, fans are not going to sustain a NIL program
You can start watching it now. No one is stopping you.
I know.
we have money, but i ain’t giving my $$$ to pay players lol…absurd
We don’t care what you did, Pearland.
Because unlike Ohio State, which has $20M in NIL money for football alone, we don’t have donors who will commit dollars to NIL. Many who give to facilities and program funds are reluctant to give money for a direct transfer to players. This applies to all fan bases to some extent, maybe more so to ours. And I understand that.
I’ll give some $ for win bonuses or actual real production for UH - maybe…. Just giving my hard earned $ away though? Not happening. 100% agree with going the corporate route. Plenty of large companies around Houston. I’d be perfectly fine with the “Exxon Mobil Houston Cougars” if they pump say $5-10M/year our way for NIL. That’s where this is all headed anyway.
I know this isn’t the most popular opinion but Fertitta’s net worth has skyrocketed over the last 5ish years and is now over $8B. $10-20M/year is really not that much to him. If HE really wanted us to be a big time program he would fork over the $. I would do that if I was THAT rich. To whom much is given much is expected….
UH football has to answer the all important question “why is UH football important to the city of Houston”.
If they can come up with an answer to that question, there is enough money in Houston to field a national championship.
Start with the why question and the how will naturally follow.
Some schools have had the infrastructure in place for years, e.g., SMU. It’s just legal now.
Really not true. If it were, considering nobody can fart without an investigative reporter on the trail, we’d have a catalog of deals made and money transferred.
FWIW, I do my part by contributing $240 per year to HOU-NIL. It paid players for the time they spent doing interviews with GoCoogs.com. To me, that’s the spirit of NIL, but proportionality has left the building along with Elvis.
If we don’t figure a way to capture NIL money for football in a big way, we will be a marginal program along with 90% of FBS teams.
We should have spent $120M on NIL instead of the football building.
We’d be ranked #1.
Would we? One year investment?
We do. We go to the games and have for years. I will not give an extra penny to go towards NIL.
I don’t care if we are P50, I will always love my Coogs
