Nearly half of Texas high school students who earn college credits are Hispanic

That’s probably a little misleading because it’s looking exclusively at students that take dual credit courses at two year colleges.

It doesn’t consider the high school students that get college credits through AP testing.

You’d probably see different demographics there.

Also, the article mentions that most of those dual credit students move on not to four year colleges, but to those same community colleges.

As someone else posted here some time ago, only about 20% of students that go to two year colleges go on to graduate from a four year college, so it’s hardly surprising that these dual credit students that go on to community colleges ultimately don’t graduate with a Bachelor’s degree.

I wonder what the numbers are on dual credit vs. ap as far as participation. Of course, one diffrence between dual credit and AP testing is with dual credit you get the hours, AP testing may count for a class but I don’t think it really counts for hours. I could be wrong, I know I did do a CLEP for a class when I was going back to finish my degree.

Actually, you are wrong.

Most colleges and universities, even Ivy League schools and equivalent, will offer hours of real academic credit for scores of 4 or 5 in AP subjects, and some universities will grant credit for a 3.

My own undergrad college, Case Western Reserve U., definitely granted academic credit for 4s and 5s on the AP exams in many subjects.

Students at schools like St. John’s that take a whole bunch of AP courses and tests in their Junior and Senior years can sometimes go to college with their entire freshman year completed before they even get there.

Maybe that’s because Hispanics are the largest designated ethnic "category " in the state of Texas.

Yea AP credits are different.

And in addition to AP credits, there are also high schools that participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.

That also awards college credit while in high school.

Again, the demographics on that may be very different.

To use UH as an example, you can get academic credit for AP, IB, CLEP, and DANTES test scores, as well as by internal placement exams in some departments.

Although a grade isn’t awarded, it will show up as transfer credit on your transcript and will indeed count as credit hours towards your degree.

Yep Mexico is taking back Texas with out firing a shot in a war

I don’t remember the IB program offering college credits when I was in high school but then that was a long time ago. Could have changed.
