It seems the coach from Marshall disappeared right after winning the conference championship and was hired by Southern Miss. This after the AD tried to fire him in the spring and would not offer him a new contract. His contract ended with the championship game.
Before the remaining coaches could meet with the team, the AD introduced the new Head Coach. This resulted in the entire team hitting the portal. Everyone quit.
One of the coaches is a friend and said “I no longer have anyone to coach. I was going to invite you to the game since you aren’t bowling but it doesn’t look like there will be one. I’m just going home and see what happens”.
Yes.
When would those fanbases. (however small or large) be in Shreveport in December?
Talk about an Aggie Honeymoon.
Most Bowls are essentially a Chamber of Commerce event.
When sponsors don’t see the $$$ crowds, they fold.
Frisco bowls the exception. Just a TV product.
Hope for a crowd but its secondary to TV product.
Hope its on.
The “Sentenced to Independence” bowl usually a wild, frozen game.
That was the coldest game I’ve been too, worse than the Armed Forces Bowl even though it was dry. They should just replace Marshall with another team. The portal is the ruination of college football.
I always used to look forward to either going to, or watching holiday bowl games. It was a reward to good teams, with good matchups, and with teams that normally would not play each other. The week of the bowl game was the opportunity for the local community to be able to showcase their city.
I fear for the future of bowl games. I see too many meaningless games, half empty stadiums, fan apathy, players opting out and all the focus on the playoff bowls.
The college football playoff has minimized the importance of every bowl not associated with the playoffs. Maybe it’s time to retire some bowls.
