Rhule will go where he wants and will have many offers, from Arizona State to Auburn to Nebraska.
He is a program builder. What he did at Temple is nothing short of a miracle, considering… And Baylor was a disaster that he restored to winning status. His last year there, Baylor competed for the championship, then he handed off a perfect situation to Aranda who won Big 12 with Rhule’s recruits. He can take any job he wants…
Matt Rhule failed in the NFL, but now college football has one of its coaching stars back in the mix
Ehhhh… he did a good job but Golden was the one that turned them into a 9-win team. He took them to the next level of being competitive in a better conference, but most credit to Golden IMO.
If fans here are looking for a Kelvin Sampson for football, then there is nobody so, any hire will have its own risk. Having said that, Rhule is as good a hire as any team can get.
- In the American: Houston is shuffling through a disappointing season amid high expectations, and with a Big 12 move looming. The school has been aggressive to the point of callousness at times; would it trap-door Dana Holgorsen if it could get Rhule back to Texas in the conference where he did his best work?
There’s no Kelven Sampson, but there are “Successful coach with a black mark on their record that we might be able to get at a discount because other programs don’t want to hire them.”
Mark Mangino, Bo Pelini, and Jim Leavitt.
Gary Patterson>Matt Rhule Records don’t lie. Didn’t end well at TCU but what ever ends well?
None of those are really comparable. Pelini’s YSU tenure was enough to show that he’s washed. Same with Mangino at ISU.
Sampson’s actually a really unique case; he never got fired for performance, but instead for an NCAA rules violation. There are a couple of similar cases to that in college football – Hugh Freeze, Mike Leach, some other guy who covered up a bunch of rapes but technically wasn’t fired for football reasons so he fits here – but most of those would draw a lot more negative attention (and rightfully so!) than the Sampson hire did.
The only Sampson type hire that would be available would be Urban Meyer.
If we’re thinking outside the box, there’s a Super Bowl winning coach who already lives in Houston. He’s unemployed, but his last job was successful. No college experience, but I bet he’d be able to recruit like hell with that shiny ring on his finger.

Kubiak?
Bum Phillips son I think.
That would be the one. Not sure he’d be any good, or even have any interest, but it’s a name to throw at the wall.
Has some health issues, I believe. Fainted on the sideline with the Texans I remember and the Bronco’s I think too. Why he retired, stress was too much for him.
No that was kubiack that fainted with the Texans. And he has already accepted a job as the coach with the Houston Roughnecks anyway.
I feel like at some point in the past we must have approached Wade Phillips and been told that he wasn’t interested in entering the college level. He’s too obvious for us to have not considered at some point.
I’d be unconvinced by Wade. He’s ancient at this point, and hasn’t really been a successful Head Coach anywhere for more than a year or two. His son is the OC for the Vikings and might be an interesting name to watch, though.
At this point he may well be too old. I just know his name seems to come up on boards every time there is an opening which makes me think that the idea has at least been explored at some point.
What about Art Briles?
I’ll hang up and listen…
