Lies my teacher told me

I think it depends on what area of the country you are in. I grew up in Ohio and we were taught the basic line of the north fought to free the slaves and that Lincoln freed the slaves. As you got older and read more you realized that Lincoln and the conflict was much more complex.

More complex as in the South literally pushed laws so they could infringe on the rights of Northern states (Fugitive slave laws).

The war was about slavery. Anyone who doesn’t believe that hasn’t looked at Southern states declarations of secession.

Ah, yes! The Lost Cause pushed largely by the Daughters of the Confederacy. It’s why statues of Confederate generals were erected and textbooks were altered to glorify the Confederacy.

More complex in terms of Lincoln was more than willing to keep slavery in place.

I grew up in Northeast Ohio which along with Massachusetts was the seat of the abolitionist movement. John Brown was from Akron.

So we were taught it was a crusade to free the slaves. That is not exactly correct.

Sure Jan
'iT wAsNT aBoUt SLavEry!"

List of non-slave holding states that seceded:

End of list.

The war would not have taken place were it not for slavery.

Again, Lincoln was more than willing to keep slavery in place where it already existed.

That is a fact.

Was the south seceding because they thought slavery was in jeopardy? Yes.

Cortez did defeat the Aztecs before small pox. He was helped by the surrounding tribes who had grown tired of giving human tribute to the Aztecs

His views changed. In his last speech, he argued that Louisiana should be readmitted to the Union with blacks able to vote and attend school. Obviously he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation.

Lincoln didn’t want the war.
The South fought the war over slavery

No doubt about it. But again up in Northeast Ohio we were taught it was a crusade to free the slaves and Lincoln was the great emancipator. That is not correct.

In fact the vast majority of northerners were not fighting to free slaves and couldn’t give a damn about them.

That is worthy of some research. How decimated were the Americans by small pox, whooping coughh etc when the conquistadors conquered the Aztecs.

You have given me something to research.

What is interesting is that the native Americans gave the europeans syphilis. Give and take.

There aree plenty of books on the Cortez conquest, with first hand accounts by both sides. The men with Cortez describe Mexico city as more bustling and elaborate than anything im Europe.
The story is simply amazing. Maybe unparalleled in time. None of it would have been possible without La Malinche, HernĂĄn CortĂ©s’s Translator and So Much More | National Endowment for the Humanities

Absolutely they changed. But at the outbreak of the war and really during the first half it was not a war to free the slaves. The border states were able to keep their slaves. Lincoln didn’t even think he had the legal right to free the slaves.

I waz happy to find out the children at my elementary school just had a lesson on the Mayan Pyramids. I know when i was growing up the only Pyramid i learned about was in Egypt

The lies the teacher told the OP concerned his ability to understand and use “to” and “too” properly. No worries. He’s an “alumni”.

It was to keep the union together. I’m not sure how many abolishnists were in the North but plenty fought for that cause. At UH, i was taught by the professor who wrote the book the movie Glory was based on. You can read the letters by commander Shaw, he was definitely fighting to end slavery.

Yeah there definitely were. In the small town that I grew up in was a major stop on the underground railroad. That history was dear to our small town and no doubt influenced how the war was taught.

At least up there the civil war was a BIG part of our American History lessons much more so than the Revolutionary War. We were taught every campaign and every battle. I get the sense down here that isn’t the case.

That’s pretty cool. Shows how regional stuff can be.
I think people want their ancestors to be on the right side of history and that’s pretty unrealistic. History is complicated and we"re still divided.

No doubt about it. Historical figures are complicated.

Yep, its a complicated story, small pox was a part of it. The surrounding people around the Aztecs were tired of the Aztec blood lust and willingly helped Cortez. But that didn’t work out well for them either.
