Born in my hometown of Brownsville Texas.
Me and Bobby McGee…iconic.
Rest in peace sir.

One of my all-time favorite people.
Really interesting life and great songwriter.
I first really knew him as an actor. It’s funny because he was a musician first, and wrote songs that I had certainly heard many times before I ever knew he was a musician (i.e. Me and Bobby McGee).
Same, one of the pee wee movies to be specific.
Terrific! He stood up alongside the best totem poles in the business.
In the minority but I love ‘Heaven’s Gate’.
Visually perfect and a nasty Western.
Maybe his acting peak.
On Tubi or Pluto free right now.
I’ve never seen it but I probably should. I have studied the New Hollywood period before and that is one of the defining downfalls of that period. Plus a roller skating rink in a Western!
I saw it so long ago when I was studying film, but can’t remember a thing about it, outside of them having to subtitle some scenes due to the heavy dust clouds.
I think it took down a studio because it was all over budget. Pretty much killed the directors career, well that and his coke habit.
Yeah, it killed UA financially. Regarded now as a masterpiece.
Hollywood overall actually didn’t mind the failure too much, as that was the end of the era of directors having almost total power over their productions.
Sunday Morning Coming Down is in my Top 10 all time songs. Rest in peace, maestro.
I don’t know about Heaven’s Gate…but 1995’s Cutthroat Island flop had a huge impact on Hollywood as well.
As to HG, I don’t think hardly anyone would go see a 4 hour movie today either…even with the sweet seats they have now.
Might be interesting to see it broken up in 4-6 parts and put on streaming as a limited series. Only way I’d watch it, as the only clips I’ve seen look lame.
Back to Kris…really loved The Highwaymen…
Not sure I’ve ever heard of Cutthroat Island. heavens gate though was one of the things that ended a particular period of Hollywood film making, when they were much more director driven pictures rather than studio driven.
Loved ‘Convoy’ as a kid.
Huge part of USA later 70s trucker craze.
