For you old timers and that use to take the Chron.
He covered the Coogs for many yrs n also the old Southwest Conf. As a young kid I grew up reading many of his articles. May he RIP.
Really sorry to hear this. He also wrote the book “Eat Em Up Coogs”, which was a history of Cougar sports from the start through the 1977 Cotton Bowl Game versus Maryland.
I came to know Jerry when I was attending the weekly press conferences many years ago. I got him to autograph my copy of his book, Sorry to hear of his passing.
Hate hearing this. Met him a few times. Always very gracious and kind.
He was an Aggie Alum but he was very supportive of UH athletics. He was one of the best (if not the best) that has ever covered UH.
You have that book too
I have the book. It’s a good one!
And my Dad and I ate lunch with him one time at a hotel when we were on a UH road trip.
Nice fellow! Read his column for years!
Sorry to hear this.

One of things mentioned in story was after several decades doing his job, an angry coach approached him-- " Jerry, I want to chew you out abt story you wrote.
Jerry replied- " Hoss I’ve been chewed out by Bear Bryant , Bill Yeoman, Darrel Royal, Frank Broyles, what’s your question"
Coach replied --“ahh it’s nothing” and walked away.
Jerry always did a great job of covering the Cougars…he was well liked by all of our coaches and was a very hard worker covering our Coogs. I thought him and John Hollis were the two best reporters to ever cover our Cougars…Hollis worked for the Post.
Prayers to the family…
An icon in his industry
He was always nice to me and a good guy. One of those respected old school media guys I dealt with. A straight shooter.
I liked Jerry a lot and had several good conversations with him. I have his book on UH, he always gave us a fair account in his stories. But, time eventually takes us all.
Sad news to hear. Everything said above is entirely accurate.
I have the book and have used it many times for historical reference. It’s highly recommended to any UH fan who wants to read about the history of UH football from the beginning through the first Cotton Bowl. Thank you Jerry for the support and for the memories.
I have the book too. Getting hard to find. Glad I got it long ago when it was still cheap used
Knew Jerry & appreciated & respected his coverage of our Coogs. Felt he was fair & did not try for the sensational. Known for his work ethic. Thankful to have known “The Wiz”.
Spent many a bus trip talking with him when we traveled to away games in the SWC. He was as kind a man as everyone here has said. Always enjoyed talking with him and hearing his stories. Rest in peace!
Couldn’t wait to open up my Sunday Chronicle (especially after a W) then catch the Bill Yeoman show on TV. Jerry was integral to a time in U of H history that will not be forgotten by us old-timers.
Prayers for his family and many friends.
R.I.P. Prayers to his entire family and friends. He was a true reporter by all sense of the terms. Just think how grateful we are to have read his columns.
