I45 expansion expected to start next month (update 9.30.24)

I’m totally against this!

But they were almost finished with the original construction

Oh? Where is it still under original construction?

I’m not going to speak for Jerry, but I’m pretty sure that was said in jest. It’s an ongoing joke about 45 always being under construction.

Ahh. Ok. Funny. I was genuinely interested as I run the entirety of I45 back and forth constantly.

I think it’s been continuously under construction if you count the stretch from Galveston to Huntsville or so.

My Dad is 72 and it’s been under construction since before he was born.

For us lately, it’s been endless 288/South Loop construction. We’re on the home stretch of five-plus years of construction on South Loop/Cambridge project. Supposed to be done in the next year or so.

Just before that project it was years of 288 toll road construction.

And now I hear they’re looking at widening the South Loop next.

My son was in kindergarten when they started 288 Toll Lane construction. He’s in high school now, and may have his own kids in kindergarten before the South Loop is finished.

“So, the public meetings will continue, at least twice a year, until the project is complete in 2042.”

Hahaha, they started the Gulf Freeway part in 1948 and they still haven’t finished working on it. The North won’t be any different.

You have misused Luddites here, as expanding 45 is nothing but a continuation of essentially 100 year old ideas. Which would in fact be a pro-Luddite position.

As opposed to say opposing an extreme contraction of 45 for a massive building out mass transit a Luddite would oppose this position.

We were supposed to have flying cars by now.

No. I just think that expanding highways is incentivizing urban sprawl, which is significantly impacting climate change, making Houston hotter and hotter and prone to more heat waves.

Also, expanding highways provides immediate relief but eventually causes more congestion in the long run. It’s pointless.

Exactly. All the highway construction around us will give us a year of relief after 10 years of traffic jams. Then they’ll start the next project.

Hey that’s money won’t spend itself

Is this the pierce elevated project we’ve been hearing about??

I-45 will be relocated to the East side of downtown, where it will share a corridor with 59.

As I understand it, the Pierce Elevated will be demolished.

It’ll be a sad day, some of my earliest memories are from bouncing along the Pierce Elevated while curled up half asleep in the floorboard of my parents’ car.

My favorite memory of the Pierce Elevated was when my friend was puking over the side of the guard rail after a night of drinking with Donald Douglass and Freddie Gilbert in the early 90’s.

There was talk one time of repurposing it as an elevated park in downtown. I kinda
like that idea, but not sure if it got squashed already.
