As Texans we may or may not use Latin/Romantic/ North Mediterranean language approach.
I see the same thing in the medical field. My initials are MD but I have only played doctor as a kid. These days I see too many of them and find it irritating how many do NOT default to Latin pronunciation.

Interesting tidbit: When Paul McCartney played Houston at Minute Maid Park, he asked the crowd "How do you pronounce Houston? “Howston”? The crowd yelled “Houston”.
