Was he a late bloomer and simply overlooked?
He only played one semester of HS Football in the US, and spent the rest of his time in Germany. Hard to get offers with so little tape available, especially pre-internet.
How about Dexter Manley? WHATS EVEN GOING ON HERE? HEADS SHOULD ROLL
Strahan’s uncle also played for TSU
I asked about Manley last year. One of the old timers said that apparently Yeoman couldn’t get him academically eligible.
Manley could not read when he came out of college.
Actually getting him academically eligible would have been a huge undertaking
We missed on Drew Brees. He actually contacted our coaching staff (Helton) and we told him he couldn’t play on a D1 level.
I don’t think he had the grades to get into any college…but back in those days some colleges had what was called the one percent rule…a rule giving them opportunities to sneak poor students on to campus. I don’t think we had the rule at the time.
Also, the nice car he was driving around the hood could have been another tell tell sign lol. Not that we were lily white when it came to recruiting, but being in a big city there were a lot more eyes staring upon us as say…Stillwater…
at around the same time there was a kid at Lee High in Houston who was a highly recruited running back, but coach Yeoman told folks he would have to go to junior college because his scores were so bad…well, he went to TCU but never really panned out…
He also thought a guy named Tumlinson was too small lol…
But could he read coming out of H.S… Maybe it was the College life that messed him up.
Can you imagine how we would have done with Drew Brees instead of Jason McKinley.
We missed on LT and Heupel too
Yes we did. Helton was an interesting guy. Personally I liked him and I think he was a good position coach. But the number of misses he had on players is shocking in retrospect.
It would have been nice to have had Dexter Manley. But despite missing out on Manley and Michael Singletary, the 1977 newcomers are still the best football recruiting class in UH history with 1974 incoming class second.
With Helton as coach? Probably not much different.
1st down - handoff to Antowain
2nd down - handoff to Antowain
3rd down - draw to Antowain
Hell if I would have had Antowain Smith I would give him the ball as well.
When Drew Brees would have been a Coog Mike Green and Ket were the running backs. Nice backs, but with a good QB they could have been amazing.
Mike Green was amazing at Klein. Unstoppable.
Are you kidding me?..playoffs…are you kidding me…who?..hammer time is so $&@“ old!..enough already
I think Jeremiah Trotter was another we could have had.
in the 80s and 90s the I-AA talent in the city was just as good as the 1-A talent cause kids weren’t overexposed, overrecruited or worn out by high school
If everyone with TSU or Prairie View ties would’ve pulled rank, there would be no legit UH football history or for other places honestly. Elmer Redd and Lloyd Wells deserve plaques for their assistance considering they were not UH grads.
check this link out on how Greg Pruitt ended up at OU - if that deal didn’t happen he’s at TSU.
