Houston Teacher Certification Scandal

https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/education/article/houston-teacher-certification-scandal-19869096.php

HISD is literally in a state of collapse. They’re hiring non-certified teachers because the certified teachers either quit or get laid off

HISD needs to get rid of Mike Miles, but they also need to find a way to get funding for HISD schools, many of which are in terrible conditions and need massive upgrades.

Unfortunately, most of the taxpayer wealth have all left for the suburbs, and the wealthy neighborhoods can’t fund everything themselves. If Houston wants HISD to become a competitive public school district again, then the money needs to return to the district

I guess the district is looking for a long-term sub for a basketball coach now. I’d consider it, but it’s a leetle out of my way.

Umm
the fake certification scandal started back in 2020, three years before the state took over. This has nothing to do with Miles or Abbott.

I have two kids in HISD and this ‘No Trust
No Bond’ campaign is pure nonsense. They do realize Miles has no authority over the bond, right? The very thing people were laying into Miles about back in May during the HVAC/power fiasco after the Derecho event, they are going to reject the solution. The schools need the infrastructure upgrade, and the technology portion of the bond is a great investment.

Kicking the can in hopes of ousting Miles is only going to delay what is sorely needed. You think the state is going to listen to HISD parents and hire someone that is going to bend over backwards for them? That’s not gonna happen. I want what’s best for my kids and the bond provides just that. Quit making this about an individual.

This scandal started before Mike Miles. It allowed people to obtain certifications via fraud and come in as certified teachers.

Not that what you said didn’t have merit but it was a separate issue from the scandal I posted with the link.

Maybe so, but like it or not, most will associate the two.

And many on here were fighting the state takeover of HISD. What say you now! Vouchers are needed for Houston students!

You realize that this wasn’t necessarily an HISD issue. This could just as easily been teachers at a private school who obtained their certifications by fraud. Vouchers wouldn’t “fix” this issue.

Also with the state takeover of HISD, they are adding more uncertified teachers. So to say that the state takeover is justified by this scandal is a stretch.

Two assistant principles

No idea what you’re trying to say there.

two hisd assistant principles were involved in the scandal

For the record they have to complete their cert before calendar year for those who were hired uncert, way different than falsifying your cert. I just finished my 230 hours, because i take honor in becoming certified. I shall hope it lets be competitive in contract negotiation

That and was tired if being broke professor, was strong rumors the adjuncts were going to form a union. Shame they let that slip away

Ok. But they just as easily could have been assistant principals at any public or private school.

But they weren’t

I could imagine two assistant principles being part of it. However, I hope heads would role if two assistant principals were involved.

Now I do not mind insulting APs, I have disliked every single one I ever met.

I am going to put on my union hat since the good folks of the HFT are my union siblings (we used to say Brothers and Sisters but we can’t do that anymore).

You got about 10,000 teachers and other title in HISD and we are talking about a relatively small percentage. These folks should have appropriate due process before any of them are dismissed.

An accusation is just that an accusation, hold your horses.

But HISD didn’t include a single improvement to its athletic facilities out of that $4 billion - those places are ancient and need to be razed - everyone around them has stepped up their games

In my 30+ years in the classroom, I can honestly say I’ve had the pleasure to have worked under a handful of very good ones. Too bad they were outweighed by some who shouldn’t have put in charge of a broom closet, let along a school.

And while we’re talking about it, could we use the correct homophone for the context? It’s principals for people, principles for ideals. Sheesh! I can’t believe I have to spell this out for college-educated people.

That is why I made the joke about principles and principals above.
