House Houston

Shame 99.99% of the residents of Houston have no clue about the family their city is named after.

Yes, Sam Houston, was the General of the Republic of Texas but the Houston’s family superior lineage is many generations deeper than that.

Andrew Jackson was Houston’s mentor because of his family’s reputation

It wasn’t named after the family, it was named after one member of the family. That is why.

I mean it’s a good story, but it’s a story, that has very little chance of catching on for marketing. Just as you said 99.99% have no clue, we’d be better off inventing a simplistic marketing/GOT thing vs. Trying to connect it to the real story.

I think you nailed it.

Yes …but Sam rose to prominence because his family lifted him there …like a DT Jr…or Bush legacy

Sure his family helped but it was in his own accomplishments that made him a war hero in Texas.

The city was actually orginally named Harrisburg…its where we get “Harris” county.

The Allen Brothers rebranded it “Houston” to stir up northeast investments

If you have to go back to Sam Houston’s great grandfather to start a new UH tradition or chant, either you have your Texas history degree and trying to apply it, or you’ve gone too far back.

The suggestion doesn’t do anything for me. I enjoy the “Whose House” chant, and don’t need to understand Scottish ancestry to appreciate it.

There’s literally a “Houston” Castle outside of Glasgow…

Their family is way deeper than Sam Houston

In this same vein, how many large cities still have emotional civic ties to that history far back. Like does any New Yorker think of the Dutch history of New Netherland or are they thinking about more recent history when it comes to their NY pride?

And that’s cool if you’re into that sort of thing. It’s just not useful for branding or marketing

When they start flying the UH flag, I will take notice of the ties to the University.

You! Sukie??? No color Blue involved? Wow, glad you came around to the Scarlet Red and Albino White.

Oh definitely!

The Dutch were a capitalistic “rags to riches”, freedom of religion culture.

The English were a hierarchical strict state church culture

Both the American Dream and the original ideals in the US Constitution, were Dutch and almost anti- English.

That attitude made that unique Dutch environment in New York the Alpha city in the United States…and Brooklyn, Harlem, and the Bronks are Dutch words

Red and white is great. It’s just not on either / or thing with the blue. Our fans love both!

Now that you mention it… maybe an htown blue facemask up on that piece

Go ask 100 new Yorkers on the street, I would expect only a small minority would point to the Dutch history.
