Godfather of talk shows dies at 88

Remember when Donahue had hardly any competition in the “shock” talk show genre?

I never thought Donahue was shock TV. I always saw him as the TV host for the stay at home moms (when that was a big number) and that was what they watched while folding clothes before they turned on Jack LaLane to work on their butts.

Going to be honest, I didn’t know he was still alive.

A medal of freedom recipient

He was certainly an icon.

Interesting summary of Donahue’s last show on MSNBC from which he was fired. Had no recollection of this at the time…but similar to claims we hear today about media bias.

On February 25, 2003, MSNBC canceled the show.[18][19]Soon after the show’s cancellation, an internal MSNBC memo was leaked to the press stating that Donahue should be fired because he opposed the imminent U.S. invasion of Iraq and that he would be a “difficult public face for NBC in a time of war”[20] and that his program could be “a home for the liberal anti-war agenda”.[21] Donahue commented in 2007 that the management of MSNBC, owned at the time by General Electric, a major defense contractor, required that “we have two conservative (guests) for every liberal. I was counted as two liberals”.[22]
