Game 36: Gonzaga vs Houston; Round of 32 (W 81-76)

Exactly.

And a certain number of those post-up shots are necessary, even if they are comparatively inefficient, as it opens up the rest of the offense/contributes to a balanced attack. I just think we take too many given how unbelievable we are from deep.

Maybe. I think the two play into each other. I doubt shooting more threes would bring up our 2pt shooting and most likely would end up taking our 3pt shooting down.

Yah it’s kind of like running the ball vs passing in football. A certain amount of each is necessary to keep the defense on its toes but at some point I think you should play to your strength.

Roberts is definitely a strength

Roberts is an option. Personally I feel like Sharp/Cryer from deep is usually an even better option. Hell even Milos from 3pt now has become a real weapon. I just feel that at times we don’t do enough to get them good looks. Ofc some of this is influenced by how a team chooses to defend you. So the answer isn’t always to try and shoot more 3s.

Now what would be interesting to know is what our offensive rebounding rate on 2’s vs 3’s is. If we generate significantly more offensive rebounds on 2’s than 3’s that would offset some of the eFG% gap. Not sure if any site tracks that.

I haven’t done the math for the whole season, but for the last 4 or 5 games we have rebounded something insane like 40-45% of our 3-point misses. The best rate tends to be on 0-3 foot shots, but the majority of our bigs’ misses seem to be from slightly further out than that (around 5-8 feet.) Second best rate is typically on 3-pointers, worst is mid-range.

Our overall average offensive rebounding rate is 37% which is elite.

We got a grand total of 4 pts from our bench in the Gonzaga game. Los was 2 of 7 (1-2 from 3). Sharp was 4 of 7 (1-3 from 3). LJ was nails. However if J’Wan doesn’t step up do we win the game?? ā€œHe didn’t have a good overall performanceā€. Good grief you’re a broken record.

I went back and watched the game again, and my general thought is:
In previous years we probably lose that game. Not enough offense to overcome Gonzaga’s 2nd half. We had a 8 point lead at halftime and gave up 49 points in the 2nd half. But we scored 46, so won by 5. Very seldom in past years have we scored 46 in a half vs a very good team.

Robert’s shot selection was fine, they just weren’t falling in the first half. It happens.

I rewatched the game 3-4 times. I lost count. But got deleted today bc i can’t keep game on DIRECTV when next gm is starting. Got me to 19-1in BIG12 , so i stayed the course, some were hard to get rid of. I know there’s Zero merit or game action to what i do, for any responders.

Even when Jwan isn’t hitting he’s still a winning player. I remember seeing a ton of negative comments about him on reddit at half time. He still had 6 rebs and 3 asts. He was impactful but obviously came out on fire in the 2nd.

Ike was kicking our frontline’s ass! Roberts and Tuggler were worn out.

Sometimes it feels Roberts has to ā€œcalibrateā€ his shots. He’ll miss a few at the beginning and then they start falling.

And the final score was…?

He’s doing what coach wants him to do. You keep using the word selfish, but you seem to not understand coach wants him to do exactly what he is doing. Apparently Coach feels like the poor shooting is tolerable or he would change the game plan…

Actually he was elbowing our frontline’s ass.

I used the word selfish because that’s what a shot is when you’re well-guarded and there are open shooters around you. And as I said before, I doubt Sampson specifically wants Roberts to shoot 20 shots when he averages 9 a game. I’m sure he’s generally okay with him taking open shots or when he has a size advantage and good position, but I can guarantee you Sampson saw some of the 5 or 6 low-percentage shots Roberts took and would have rather he pass them back out.
