Damn, you gotta tell me when I’m gonna hit something on here that’s gonna turn on the waterworks…
Make no mistake. I’ve been an outspoken advocate about this very thing. I’ve been one that reminds others of Sampson’s approach (misses can be good). And there is overwhelming evidence to support that as a successful formula.
And… you mention LJ… that was specifically something I’ve said about Cryer’s floaters (when Pesik was indicating midseason that the % indicated Cryer should shoot fewer of them). I did not (never did) agree with that. I love cryer shooting those.
And same thing here. I’m advocating that I love for Roberts to attack like he does… for all the reasons I mentioned above.
I only meant in my reply that the stat (ppp) proving my stance wasn’t really what was being specifically argued by PWB.
So yup…I fully agree and that has actually been my point in my last handful of posts in this thread. We tend to do well on 50-50 balls, so get shots up!
I was inspired by your post to see how we fared on our 3-point shots, and of our 8 missed threes, we grabbed 3 offensive rebounds and scored 6 points on those extended possessions (a free throw, layup, and another 3).
So with 8 makes for 24 points and 3 offensive rebounds off missed 3s leading to 6 points, we scored 30 points on 15 offensive possessions in which we shot a 3 (15 since one possession we shot 2 of them). That is an elite points-per-possession rate of 2.0 (and also confirms my suspicion that we rebound our 3-point misses at a higher rate than our post-ups-- I suspect this would hold true for other games as well.)
None of this is to contradict your defense of Roberts’ shots in the post, but it illustrates how insanely effective our possessions are where we shoot 3s.
edit: we grabbed 9 offensive rebounds on our 18 misses against SIU, as well (and something crazy like 6 on 8 misses before the subs came in and bricked a ton of 3s without rebounding them as well.) Led to 9 extra points. Grabbed 5 of 14 against Arizona (funny enough, 0 extra points on those possessions.)
Our offensive rebounding rate on 3s might be close to 40+% on the season! That’s insane.
That doesn’t surprise me though.
I’m not advocating interior attacks are better than a successful perimeter attack…especially with a 3 point line involved aiding the latter over the former. Not at all. I love to see a 3pt onslaught!
I’m saying that…at this level… you are going to struggle if you don’t have both. And I know you agree with that part of it.
Where we might still differ is that I want those shots being taken by Roberts…even when he misses a few in a row. Same with Cryer’s floaters…we NEED those to be shot.
I contend that we’d be worse for it in every way if we dont allow our season-long proven best weapons to fire away and do what they do. It’s the only way to reap the spacing created by having that threat as well as the likely eventuality that they will start going in over the course of a game.
So when Roberts starts out 3 for 9, its likely a big mistake to wish he will stop being aggessive or no longer have the green light. I say “Go for it J’wan - your approach is a HUGE reason for our extraordinary success!”
Agreed. I just hope we shoot closer to 25-30 threes against Purdue. They STINK at defensive rebounding (ranked #223).
It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
One reason why making the 2nd weekend is important for a program. It buys you another week of practice, media coverage, and publicity. Ofc making the final weekend is an even more amplified version of that but just by making the 2nd weekend every year, you ensure that the spotlight shines on your program and that you stay relevant in the national landscape.
J’Wan Definitely finished strong but did the things that help you win games in both halves.
1st
6 rebounds
3 assists
1 steal
6 pts (3 of 9)
2nd
2 rebounds
2 assists
1 steal
12 pts (6 of 9)
And yet there’s a clown on here who says his “overall performance wasn’t good”.
18 points on 18 shots is not good, and that was the only part of his game I was critiquing. Get that through your thick skull and learn ball while you’re at it.
I thought you blocked me??
Crawl back in your hole.
You keep talking. Learn ball.
Go finish your 5th grade homework, take your bath and get ready for bed.
Great article in The Athletic today. It is a $ pay article.
Lots about the Gonzaga game. Thought this was interesting and addresses JWan’s first half struggles
Hmmm … that math doesn’t add up for me. 18 points on 18 shots means he made 50% of his shots and that’s always a good %. If all our shooters make 50% of their shots we’re in really good shape with our defense.
Add in three pointers and free throws and that ratio can still look better
As I already explained many times in subsequent posts, a 1 point per shot average is not very good, particularly for a big only taking 2s, and not at all efficient. Coogs overall average 1.26 on the season, and our guards averaged 1.71 against Gonzaga. That is the definition of volume shooting and with as good as our guards are, it is not necessary.
Do you really think the efficiency would stay the same if the volume went up?
This is a stupid question, because obviously efficiency will come down with higher volume.
I think the actual point is that the guards’ efficiency would have to come WAY down to match the inefficiency of the shots in question, much more so than a moderate increase in volume would cause. (For instance, they’d have to go 0 for their next 17 to match Roberts’ inefficiency against Gonzaga.)
I think our team eFG% might go up if our 3pt volume went up, even though our 3pt% would drop since we’re so inefficient at shooting 2’s.
