The Louisiana Tech thing I get, but I don’t think there were any SBC teams that would have passed on an invite at the time and I don’t remember either of them being too antagonistic.
That said, it kind of works out where blackballing those programs isn’t really cutting their nose off to spite their face anyway. They aren’t really the best candidates available.
What a mess, all over the place too. Probably should aim to have travel partners to help with the other sports. Even though NMSU is not good, add them to pair with UTEP. WKU and MTSU are already travel partners. Sam Houston probably the best option somewhat close to LA Tech, might as well do SFA too. Just no idea who to add near FIU. Liberty could be football only to get to 9 or 10.
“should” isn’t “will”, of course. See UMass/UConn.
Idaho is the only recent case of dropping down, and their hope of finding a new conference was especially dire, and they had a perfect FCS setup (with historic rivals and peer institutions) waiting for them.
The easy option for CUSA to just add an NMSU to get to the conf minimum and have a scheduling agreement with the eastern independents is not realistic.
Army, UConn, UMass, and Liberty a long, long way away.
Is the $ there to make these away game hikes for either group?
Doubt Liberty would bother w what is left and join.
CUSA needs to rebuild with whoever around what they have left right away and it will not be easy. How many FCS schools will commit the resources to move up and join the leftovers? There must be many between Tx and Florida.
Million for the entire CUSA ?
A million split between all the members hardly a fortune.
How much would it cost UMass just to get the football team to El Paso or Ruston, LA ?
IIRC, it’s six. The American only had five baseball teams remaining, so they would need one more. If the MWC deal had gone thought, Air Force would have to play all sports in the AAC or they would’ve had to find a baseball only member (i.e. Dallas Baptist).
The G5 conferences split about $80M CFP money which may be about $1.1M per team if it is 14 teams in a conference. Add TV payout, bowl money and March Madness money and that is your conference payout.
"If a collection of teams in the newly-formed C-USA don’t draw enough interest from networks, it could go away. The C-USA television deal with CBS expires after the 2022-23 academic year…One aspect in C-USA’s favor is the $4 million exit fee. If nine schools left, that would add $36 million to help entice new members. C-USA commissioner Judy MacLeod has been frantically trying to keep her existing members together while reaching out to candidates to replace those schools that left, multiple sources told CBS Sports. "
"There has been contact between C-USA and McNeese State from the Southland Conference and Sam Houston of the WAC, sources told CBS Sports. Like James Madison, those are FCS schools that would require an NCAA-mandated multi-year transition process to FBS.
“She’s getting calls from every aspiring FCS program,” said a source from one of those schools."
