Future Realignment Thread

Another bonus for Sac State trying to get in the Pac-12.

PAC-12 only offered to pay each school $2.5m to leave. The cost to leave The American is $27m.

Harris said this is a different situation than joining, say, the SEC, which is an established league that hasn’t lost a member in decades. There was also uncertainty in TV revenue, as the Pac-12 does not have a TV deal for its new configuration. Tulane also considered the additional travel cost, as more than half of the league would be outside the central time zone.

When did the cost shoot up to 27 million? Didn’t we pay like 17 million to leave the AAC?

I remember UTEP Head Coach Mike Price entering the field from the stands waving that ridiculous pickaxe prop. This was right after Price was fired as Head Coach at Alabama, never coaching a game, for misbehaving. But I digress

Not sure, but quote from the article

One of the sticking points, per reporting, was that the Pac-12 was only willing to cover $2.5 million of the reported $27 million exit costs for each team, as the AAC requires 27 months notice to leave the league.

IIRC, UCONN, UH, UC, and UCF negotiated the price down. The conference may be less willing to do that now.

Ah maybe it has to do with the lack of notice.

Inflation!

Well it seems like the MWC may have found their last full member.

OK, so is the PAC Light going to boost Sac State to I-FBS?

How do they get to eight members?

SAC State looking all in.
Lower scholarship FCS tier to G5 in a few seasons ?
Realistic now with NIL & portal.

Should be free

I was thinking the PAC-12 would have brought Hawai’i for football only since Gonzaga is all sports except football. It would be like Wichita St. took Navy’s spot for all sports except football when we were in the AAC.

According to this article, if your school plays a sport sponsored by the PAC-12, you have to compete as a PAC-12 member. Gonzaga is moving all of their sports to the PAC-12. It kills the idea of Hawai’i (or anyone) as a football only member.

One interesting note. Six schools are required for a conference to compete in a sport (eight required for FBS football). Right now, only five PAC-12 schools have baseball (Oregon St., Wazzu, SDSU, Fresno St., and Gonzaga).

They are going to need a school that has baseball.

Texas St has baseball

Nothing says Mountain West like Northern Illinois and Toledo and the 12 TV sets they’ll bring with them

What conference was Hawai’i in before?

In football, MWC.

In other sports, most recently, the WAC, then the Big West.

Now, it appears they will be an “all sports” MWC member.

I’m still waiting to see who the PAC Light adds as an eighth football member.

So UTEP is the only TX school changing conferences?

So far yes
