Future Realignment Thread

Well I guess Florida State, Clemson and UConn are all G5-level football programs that don’t deserve to be in the Big 12 per this message board!

Yormark needs to go after Georgia or Ohio State

Oh and Virginia Tech because they can’t even beat the “UConn of the SEC”

OK.

So the MWC isn’t extending its scheduling agreement with the PAC beyond this season.

Looks like the PAC-2 may end up being UConn style football independents in 2025.

What will their ultimate home be?

I just don’t see their value in the Big 12. Both Oregon State and Washington State are great football programs, but they best fit in a regional Power Conference. Unfortunately, regionality is no longer all that relevant anymore. They simply do not add to the Big 12’s media value, and the travel costs are not worth the revenue dilution.

With that being said, I think every Big 12 fan should be rooting for FSU (and Clemson) to continue their losing streaks because it makes both of them less attractive to the Power 2.

I’m still bullish on UConn. I think they can build a competitive football program to the parity of the majority of the Big 12, but their basketball is a net positive for their overall conference whereas WSU/OSU do not really bring any net positives in either football or basketball.

PAC 12 paid $14M to MWC for scheduling alliance in 2024. Guess they weren’t willing to pay again in 2025 and MWC said oh well.

Could be the remaining PAC 12 teams are banking on joining a P4 by 2025, even though there is no indication there is any interest.

CBS mentioned @ $ 260 million PAC funds coming to them.

-State expects Wazzou 2 pay its $100 million + debt on its own.
Over $10 million a year.

Wazzou could still end up broke in MWC despite $130 million coming.

-O State with a low debt smart facility plan and $130 million to plan around.
They should be fine for $ if MWC in the future.

“[Wazzu] already has delayed other projects and is relying on revenue from parking tickets on campus to help pay off the [athletic’s] debt.” School officials used the projected revenue [from Pac-12 Network] that never materialized to plan for facility upgrades that have left them in debt. “No question, if those dollars [that we spent] were unencumbered, we’d be looking at making enhancements to our residence halls and so forth,” Mulick said.

[The university spent funds to upgrade its football stadium that they now wish they had used to fund other campus needs, like residence halls.]

“From a financial standpoint … there are likely to be big changes ahead for WSU athletics.” It appears that WSU hasn’t begun to make big cuts despite a dire outlook. They will continue deficit funding until they need to be bailed out. Memphis is in a bit of a similar situation except they didn’t commit $100M in debt.

How much debt is UH taking on for the new football complex?

I predict that the Big Ten is targeting 3 schools come next media deal negotiations (doesn’t mean those schools accept the invite)

  1. Notre Dame
  2. UNC
  3. Texas A&M

In that order

I would say Florida State, but until they get AAU, i just don’t see it happening

I thought you prodicted that the B1G will collapse and schools will move to the SEC or Big 12?

Dream scenario: Texas A&M rejects the B1G offer, stating they are a better cultural fit for the SEC, and to get a footprint in Texas, the B1G sets its sights on UH.

UH does not let the B1G finish asking the invite.

B1G Commissioner: “UH would you consider…”

Dr. Khator interrupts mid-sentence: “Yes UH accepts an invite to the B1G Conference.”

I still believe that happens, but it won’t happen with the next media cycle.

I know A&M doesn’t want to be in the same conference as the Horns, but right now it just doesn’t make any sense to leave. Kinda also why I put in parenthesis that whether or not schools accept a Big Ten invite is up in the air.

I think even UNC would prefer the SEC over the Big Ten

The SEC has Vanderbilt, the B10 has Northwestern, the ACC has Wake Forest, the B12 does not need to add a Rice/UCONN for easy wins. Every school now has the potential to be good in football and great in basketball.

I think the general difference is that UConn would be expected to catch up to the overall parity of the Big 12.

The gap between Alabama and Vanderbilt is quite wide. The gap between Ohio State and Northwestern is wide. The gap between FSU/Clemson and Wake Forest is well… somewhat wide.

If UConn is given 6 years to develop their program in preparation for football with a staff, NIL, recruiting, etc… then they would be more-or-less equal to everyone in the Big 12 given this conference doesn’t have a Bama or an Ohio State.

What Yormark was trying to do was get a blue blood basketball program into the Big 12 in order to negotiate seperate media deals between football and basketball, in order to generate even more revenue for the conference, because ESPN made it clear in their terms that UConn would NOT dilute revenue. In other words, adding UConn or someone like Virginia Tech would not add to the media value nor dilute revenue, but this is only possible because UConn’s basketball is THAT good.

I don’t think UConn is out of the picture, but I think the Big 12 just wants to wait to see what happens with the ACC first.

I don’t think A&M goes to the big10. As mentioned they fit with the sec with heated rivals vs Texas, Lsu etc. The big10 offers them no rivals, way more travel to the west coast, freezing temps , tougher travel for their fans and a lesser conf overall. You never give up being in the best conf overall to take a step down. Even if they left Texas would then be in a better spot with closer teams , warmer weather etc.

I don’t see it happening. We do have a slight shot if we get AAU and improve in other areas like I mentioned in other posts.

Tulane left the sec and they regret it. A&M would regret it so I don’t think they do plus if you polled their fans, they’d say no way we want the big10.Their board of regents wouldn’t get it passed to go bc of their fans etc

If UH was sec, would we ever go big10 if we had the bird in hand option ?

Answer is no.

We’d take the big10 simply bc we have no options other than big12 unlike A&M with options.

I think it depends on how A&M does down the fairway.

If the Longhorns start reaching SEC championships or CFP appearances consistently and A&M does not, then I think A&M is going to want to scratch that Big Ten itch (assuming they have an invite). A&M always compares themselves to UT, and if they can’t compete, then they leave (happened in the Big 12).

But agree, logistically, A&M is a 100x better fit in the SEC over the Big Ten.

As far as UH goes. We actually almost had a chance to go to the SEC with A&M in 1991, but A&M backed out and ended up joining the Big 12.

And even more history for you, Ole Miss (yes, Ole Miss) wanted UH in the SEC back in the 50s

I don’t think UH has any shot at the Big Ten even with AAU. We simply do not pull enough TV numbers to add to the pie. I think Big Ten is done expanding unless it’s a monster add like A&M, UNC, Notre Dame, etc.

We say that but boy did their fans show up big time for a blueblood from the heart of Big 10 Country, Notre Dame.

Swap the SEC schools for Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, ND, Nebraska, etc. And they will continue to pack the place

In the new B1G, they’d be getting home games against one of those schools like once a year. Granted, the Aggies would put 100k in Kyle Field for a C-USA schedule if they had to, but are the boosters really gonna be excited about ditching the SEC for the chance to play Minnesota and Illinois and Iowa?

If it means an easier shot at reaching the CFP on a consistent basis, then yes, they would probably give it some real consideration.

Do A&M fans support a move? Probably not.

Well, I guess UH fans will not attend any away games.
