Duke is head and shoulders above UNC academically.
But the SEC is not going to add a private school with a 40K seat football stadium.
The Big 10 might. Although they balked on Stanford so who knows.
Iām pretty sure the Big 12 would take Duke in a heartbeat. They fit the basketball model Yourmark is trying to build.
But Duke might look down its nose at the Big 12 (like Stanford did) even if Florida St/Clemson bolt. Duke and Stanford (and SMU) might opt to stay in the ACC with Notre Dame, Cal, Wake, BC and others, adding some Big East schools like UConn.
I agree with everything here, however, I donāt think Duke would get a unanimous vote into the Big 12. Just because Yormark wants something doesnāt always mean the school presidents/ADās want the same thing.
I personally would pass on Duke because I think there are better options from the ACC that would create value, which IS what Yormark is aiming to do for the conference. While Duke definitely adds basketball power, they donāt offer anything for football which is what drives most of the money. The only way I would agree to add Duke is if Yormark can negotiate a separate basketball media partnership/deal that would make up for the difference.
Actually, i see Duke going to the SEC before they ever go to the Big 12.

The SEC could add UNC + Virginia + Duke + Kansas to get to 20 and would be #1 in both Football AND Basketball.
The UNC/ Duke rivalry is the most watched Basketball rivalry there is. Think the SEC wants that in their conference?
Also a rotation of Kansas vs Kentucky / UNC / Duke would be Must Watch TV
