I have never heard the term “Cougar High” until I came on forums filled with people over 40.

So, the good news is that anybody born after 1984 has never used that term.

“Cougar High” was invented by The Aggies, who we played during the 1950’s thru 1965.

Their yell was “Beat the hell out of Cougar High”.

Most ignorant terms and yells against Texas schools can be traced to College Station.

I can’t help but contrast how entering the Big 12 feels for me versus entering the SWC in 1976. I was a freshman at UH then, and we had been made to wait five years to join (so other teams could catch up and try to put a dent in our recruiting), made to play home games at Rice Stadium, and essentially disrespected in every way possible. That season was like a holy crusade for us as we won the SWC title (after going 2-8 in 1975), destroyed Texas in Austin 30-0, and won the Cotton Bowl.

This year feels so different to me, maybe because I’m 65 and not 18 :grinning:. One big difference is that our talent level is a bit below some of the teams we’ll be playing, and we don’t have a legend like Yeoman at the helm. I’m still optimistic that we will grow into the Big 12 and be very competitive, but I feel more apprehension for 2023, whereas it was all excitement back in 1976.

We heard that chant several times a game for each SWC game against Aggie, both home and away. Aggie has the “Beat the hell out of…” for every opponent, but none more disrespectful than for UH.

I like how that article mentions the “Holy Trinity” of UH greatness: P5 athletics, new medical school, and bigger endowment.

We’ve achieved two out of three.

Now, we all need to get to the polls this November and outvote the Whorns and Gaggies to make #3 a reality.

I guess I am among the next group to ship out being 85 this coming December. I don’t know how many FB and BB seasons I have left but hope they can be special.

I was at our last game in the SWC when we played Rice and they Phi Slamma Jam glory days for basketball. My son graduated from U of H and was a Frontiersman, he is now witnessing the resurgence of U of H basketball and our entry into the Big 12. He was pretty much raised at the school. Even when we were in CUSA and the AAC I have always the journey as a Coog fan.
I don’t expect much from football this year, but I know things will get better.
Get your friends out the tailgates are going to be great.

I have always been a fan of repurposing “Cougar High”. I had a Cougar High Life T shirt back in the day. Used to use “Ain’t no high like a Cougar HIGH” and used to write Cougar High-ku. Here’s a sample:

Cougar football comes
Big 12 will be really tough
Hope Coogs are ready

I thought the title was perfect. I had to reread it twice to get the double Cougar High
